Fujitsu Focuses on Turnkey Ultra-Broadband Solutions at Broadband World Forum Europe 2009

Fujitsu introduces the concept of Ultra-Broadband Dial tone and highlights the benefits of a distributed access strategy.

Paris, 7th September 2009 — Fujitsu Telecommunications Europe Limited, a leading supplier of networking solutions, is showing its turnkey Next Generation Access capability on Stand No. 563 at this year's Broadband World Forum Europe (CNIT LA DÉFENSE, Paris, 7 - 9 September), including the launch of its Integrated Voice VDSL2 card. A unique feature of Fujitsu's VDSL2 card is that it enables conventional Voice services to be run over VDSL2 without a copper overlay back to the exchange, eliminating costly duplication of services through two different network architectures, and improving QoS by bringing exchange services closer to the customer. Complementary to FTTC, Fujitsu is demonstrating its turnkey FTTH solution, which includes outside plant and incorporates Motorola’s AXS1800 GPON solution.

Andy Stevenson, Fujitsu Telecommunication Europe's Chief Executive Officer, believes that its MSAN-based cabinet solution can provide operators with a key component, combining essential network rationalisation with improved customer services, explaining:
"Operators are under continuing pressure to improve services while reducing costs, presenting unparalleled challenges in the current economic climate. The need to replace legacy equipment is accelerating, and this has to be done without any customer disruption. At Broadband World Forum, Fujitsu is addressing the specific challenges of migrating networks to the new NGA world, re-using proven exchange-based NGN solutions with the latest voice technology. Our innovative access technology, combined with proven strategic and implementation support services, ensures that the most cost- and time-efficient solutions can be deployed, maximising the re-use of existing network investment while enhancing services in line with customer demand."

Taking centre stage on the stand is Fujitsu's cabinet version of its Copper MSAN, the GeoStream Access Gateway FDX, which incorporates the new integrated Voice and Data VDSL2 line card. Integrating Voice and Data on a single configurable line card enables the provisioning of each service to be managed remotely, avoiding the need for multiple field visits to cabinets and the associated re-jumpering. The new VDSL2 line cards are designed to deliver ultra high-capacity broadband, as well as avoiding the need for either a separate POTS network or an additional VoIP CPE to handle Voice. As legacy PSTN equipment reaches obsolescence, these services can be supported for a small increment on the broadband investment, compared to the costs of a new network. The VDSL2 card is fully backward-compatible with existing ADSL2+ CPE, and provides the capability to provide Ultra-Broadband Dialtone – enabling Ultra-Broadband services to be made available to every customer as ubiquitously as PSTN Dialtone.

Fujitsu’s Cabinet technology allows NGN-quality electronics to be placed much closer to the customer, typically increasing speed by a factor of 4. Fujitsu’s Distributed MSAN solution allows the core voice processing functionality to be centrally located, thus increasing the number of lines that can be supported from a cabinet, within the size constraints of a street cabinet, and allowing the cost of core functionality to be amortised over many more lines. In combination with the FTTC proposition, Fujitsu is offering a turnkey FTTH solution with its partner Motorola. Fujitsu is exhibiting the AXS1800 GPON Solution, as well as some of the Outside Plant solutions currently being deployed as turnkey projects with Motorola.

Supporting Ultra-Broadband speeds in the Access Network requires an upgrade to the Bandwidth capabilities of Access Aggregation and backhaul equipment. Fujitsu is also showing the latest developments for its Fibre MSAN solution, the FLASHWAVE® 9500 Packet Optical Networking Platform (Packet ONP) that allows ROADM, SDH and Ethernet switching to be deployed from an integrated platform. This platform allows the delivery of multiple 10GBits to Fujitsu’s FTTC and FTTH solutions, dramatically reducing contention ratios in the network. This is vital for improving the customer experience in times of heavy network load. This platform has been nominated for an InfoVision Award, with the winners to be announced during Broadband World Forum Europe. Finally, Fujitsu is demonstrating its comprehensive VoIP and Unified Communications (UC) capability in partnership with MetaSwitch, aimed at improving business efficiency and providing significantly enhanced communications facilities.
