Fujitsu Demonstrates PSTN Migration Strategy with H.248 Interoperability at GMI 2004

Fujitsu Telecommunications Europe successfully performs H.248 interoperability testing as part of GMI 2004 - with its modular, multi-service GeoStream Access Gateway

October 14, 2004

Fujitsu Telecommunications Europe Ltd, the leading supplier of high performance telecommunications solutions, has successfully demonstrated H.248 interoperability as part of Global Multiservice Switching Forum (MSF) Interoperability (GMI) 2004. The testing has verified for the first time that H.248 is suitable for PSTN legacy network migration in the United Kingdom, when implemented according to the MSF UK Access Gateway Implementation Agreement. By connecting a standard UK phone line to Fujitsu's GeoStream Access Gateway Multi-Service Access Node (MSAN) platform, calls can be seamlessly converted to Voice over IP (VoIP), whilst supporting the full set of UK PSTN features.

The interoperability testing was conducted in conjunction with a MetaSwitch VP3500 Series Softswitch, configured as a Media Gateway Controller using the MSF H.248 UK Access Gateway Implementation Agreement. Chris Gallon, Senior Network Architect at Fujitsu explains: "With these tests, we have shown that the MSF UK Access Gateway Implementation Agreement provides the additional capability required to make H.248 fit for purpose for UK PSTN deployments. Network operators can now be confident that a solution exists for the early migration of the UK PSTN to VoIP, enabling a smooth, seamless transition that fully preserves existing customer service. This is the first time that the MSF H.248 Implementation Agreement for a UK access gateway has been demonstrated, with Fujitsu's GeoStream Access Gateway and MetaSwitch's VP3500 Series Softswitch interoperating successfully. In addition to validating the MSF UK Access Gateway Implementation Agreement, the testing also demonstrated interoperability between analogue phones (connected to the GeoStream Access Gateway) and VoIP terminals, based on both MGCP and SIP protocols. We are delighted to have shown interoperability of this Implementation Agreement successfully, together with MetaSwitch, and we believe that the MSF UK Access Gateway Implementation Agreement provides a solid foundation for the migration to VoIP within the UK."

About GMI 2004
GMI 2004 will test a deployable and operationally ready VoIP network with Services, Applications, Network Management, enhanced Quality of Service (QoS) and Security features. Taking place between October 4-16, GMI 2004 is being hosted by major carriers in North America, the UK, Japan, and Korea. Each test site is being connected by live network facilities, creating a realistic test environment to examine the interoperability and deployment of multi-service next generation networks on a global scale. GMI 2004 is testing application servers, media servers, service brokers, call agents, bandwidth managers and other control and management systems against the specific protocols defined in MSF Interoperability Agreements (IAs).

GeoStream Access Gateway
At the core of Fujitsu's GeoStream Access Gateway next generation MSAN platform is the Hub 1000 - capable of supporting thousands of broadband users on a single ATM/Ethernet network interface. Currently the world's most advanced DSL platform, GeoStream Access Gateway Hub 1000 is designed to provide operators with the optimum cost-efficient technology, with which to build next generation networks. The modular, multi-service GeoStream Access Gateway Hub 1000 offers a powerful combination of flexibility and scalability, with multi-layered potential for maximising an operator's opportunities for revenue generation and cost saving.
