System design for the digital era

The volume of digital systems that collect, refine and analyze vast cross-industry data from the myriad connections between people, goods and things is rapidly increasing. Across many different areas of society, these systems are extracting value and enabling the provision of new services. Digital systems are also playing an ever more important role in delivering a new type of customer experience (CX). Every point of touchpoint between the system and the customer has to meet or exceed expectations.

The digital era has introduced a new level of complexity, with data now connected by IoT and AI technologies. As a result, there is a need for a new generation of data-driven technologies, capable of developing and operating systems automatically and autonomously. With such systems, we can fully comprehend customer and system statuses, identify problems quickly in real-time and use data continuously to make improvements.

Systems that perform automated operations based on pre-defined rules, such as Robotic Process Automation (RPA), are already in widespread use. However, in the example of the autonomous car, systems have to be able to respond instantly to many changes on multiple levels. This requires technology that can accurately recognize and analyze various types of data, such as IoT and video, in order to respond seamlessly to changes in both users' psychological conditions and the environment. Fully autonomous operation, with rapid software adaptation to respond to the user’s requirements, relies on combining technology that can provide the control functionality with the ability to predict future behavior.

Above all, Fujitsu Laboratories’ aim is to develop systems specifically designed for the digital era, realizing a future society in which ICT both supports and interacts with people through human-centric autonomous systems.
