Responsible Business Report: UK & Ireland

Responsible Business at Fujitsu is a global model, implemented locally. Every day, our people across the world practice our values of Aspiration, Trust and Empathy. This report documents continuing efforts over the last year in connecting our social value goals, building an inclusive workplace and advancing the sustainability agenda in the UK&I region, through Fujitsu Global Responsible Business commitments.

Our approach

Responsible practices are embedded within our organisation and how we work. Our Global Responsible Business (GRB) framework helps to embed responsible thinking, practices, and action across our organization. We have incorporated non-financial indicators in our global business reporting with Fujitsu leadership actively involved in setting targets and driving action via our global Sustainability Management Committee and UK Responsible Business Board.

Social value

On 25th September 2020, a new Government Public Policy Note (Reference PPN06/20) was released which set out how Social Value would be considered in the award of central government contracts.

This represented a landmark moment for Social Value as it meant that from 1st January 2021, every contract would be assessed in terms of its impact on promoting new jobs and skills, encouraging economic growth and prosperity, improving wellbeing, and recovering from the Covid-19 pandemic and levelling up and driving equal opportunity throughout the UK.

    • This has been facilitated by ensuring that every contract assigning a minimum of 10% of the evaluation weighting aligned to Social Value, which in our competitive market can obviously be the difference between winning and losing.

      This news was widely welcomed throughout Fujitsu as given that our purpose is ‘To make the world more sustainable by building trust in society through innovation’, the delivery of societal impact through the delivery of Social Value is at the core of what we are targeting to deliver as a business. A powerful way of illustrating this is the below diagram, which shows that our long-standing responsible business pillars are already very closely aligned to both the government’s target outcomes and the best practice for measuring and evidencing Social Value impact, the National Themes, Outcomes and Measures or TOMs.

      Now whilst this provided us with a strong base from which to build on; we really see this as a starting point rather than the end position and have been working to determine how we can deliver the greatest societal impact in a manner that is meaningful to our customers. With this in mind, we have focused on three principal activities:
      • Measurement: For which we’ve been recognised for by TechMarketView as the first IT Services business to partner with Social Value Portal, who are the authors of the National TOMs and are the market leaders in Social Value capture, measurement, monitoring and reporting.
      • Our customers priorities: Focusing on those activities that are most relevant to our customers to enable us to develop socially impactful and relevant solutions and services that deliver real value; and
      • Reimagining our business activities and service solutions: In the context of contract aligned, geographically specific and customer relevant solutions.

      To achieve this in a consistent and controlled manner, over the past 12 months Fujitsu has invested in people, processes, and systems to empower our teams to deliver real value from a Social Value perspective. This has included:

      • Raising awareness throughout the business: Through a series of business-wide training programmes focused on ensuring that everyone is aware of what Social Value is, how to build customer focused Social Value propositions and ensure successful achievement through delivery.
      • Building the Fujitsu specific Themes, Outcomes and Measures (TOMs): Developed with support from Social Value Portal to provide a suite of 48 individual TOMs (Illustrated in figure 2) that enable us to express our Social Value in financial terms, drawing on a wide range of data sources such as the Office of National Statistics (ONS) and the Unit Cost Database.

      • The development of immediately deployable Social Value propositions: Leveraging our corporate capabilities and approaches to deliver tangible impact for specific customers, in targeted geographies to realise significant impact.
