This was an ultra-large IBM-compatible machine under joint development by Fujitsu and U.S. company Amdahl, completed in 1975. The first unit put into use was produced by Fujitsu and delivered to NASA's (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) Goddard Space Flight Center in the U.S., in the same year under the Amdahl brand. This machine had twice the calculation speed of the IBM360/165 which was then owned by the Center, and while at the time even IBM required a period of 2 to 3 weeks from installation of such units before they could begin operation, it was successfully brought to operation in just 5 days. Subsequently, rumors of this first unit in operation at NASA spread rapidly throughout the industry. Since the unit was priced lower than IBM machines while showing high performance, large-scale computers from Amdahl were soon accepted in the U.S. market.
