Fujitsu's Sweep Sensor, MBF300 Biometric Sensor IC Wins 2002 EDN Magazine Innovation Award
Sunnyvale, CA, May 1, 2003 — EDN Magazine announced that Fujitsu's MBF300, Sweep Sensor™ IC won the 2002 "Innovation of the Year" award in the peripherals category. The announcement was made at EDN's annual award dinner April 22 in San Francisco.
This is the second consecutive year in which Fujitsu Microelectronics America (FMA) has won an Innovation Award from EDN Magazine editors and readers. Last year, Fujitsu's Fast Cycle RAM (FCRAM™) ICs and plasma display products (PDPs) won awards.
"Electronic Design News is one of the industry's most prestigious and most well-read publications by design engineers. We are honored to accept this year's Innovation Award," said Ken Iida, president and CEO of Fujitsu Microelectronics America. "The fact that the readers made the selection is particularly exciting and gratifying for all of us at Fujitsu."
About MBF300 Sweep Sensor
The MBF300 biometric sensor IC was introduced in March 2002 as the industry's most advanced, cost-efficient fingerprint verification
system, built on the company's solid-state sensor technology and world-class template-matching engine algorithms. The product
is designed to meet the rapidly growing demand for security systems based on biometric technology.
Fingerprint identification systems are rapidly replacing identification technology that relies on passwords and personal ID numbers (PINs), which are often lost, forgotten or stolen. "The biometric signature technology built into these new fingerprint-based verification systems provides a new form of highly reliable, secure user authentication for unlocking and enabling secure communication over mobile devices," said Doug McArthur, director of FMA's Biometric Sensor Products Group. "Our MBF300 system represents a major breakthrough, combining sweep sensor hardware with powerful algorithms in a highly accurate method that will rapidly authenticate users of PDAs and cell phone devices."
