Technologies

Thorough data protection at the heart of each server

SPARC64™ VI and UltraSPARC T2 processors

All SPARC Enterprise models deliver high reliability mechanisms in all major components, especially in core components such as CPUs and memories. The data protection mechanisms are also embedded in hardware for maximum efficiency. In mid-range/high end models, almost every processor data error can be prevented due to data protection logic in all processor circuits. Such thorough data protection means even data errors occurring during calculation processes can be recovered. To protect from memory errors, data in memory is protected by data correction and memory patrolling mechanisms in Memory Access Controllers, again hardware implemented.
Further, any data exchanged across I/O, memory and CPU buses is also protected from data error. The LSIs controlling such data exchange contain the data protection mechanisms.
As a result, the heart and the highways of each server provide the highest levels of data protection for maximum business protection and system stability.


Redundancy and hot replacement delivers system continuity

With all major server components redundant as standard, server operation is assured against component failure. In addition all failed components can be replaced while the server remains in operation. The ensures SPARC Enterprise maintains high business continuity. In fact all mid-range and high-end models provide the best in mission critical server operation due to their high levels of redundancy and ease of hot-replacement.
Activation of the unique memory mirroring function enables even higher levels of system continuity as customers can now avoid system failures caused by memory error; a process not possible on other vendors' platforms.

Innovations for high performance in many application areas

Processor and crossbar technologies enable both high performance computing and balanced IO/memory access, achieving stable performance in a wide variety of mission critical application areas. Balanced to server resource access requirements they also enable highest possible performance between processors/disk/memory.
In addition to high performance technologies such as Out of Order Execution and Branch Prediction, multi-threading and multi-core technologies mean efficient application execution in both high and low CPU load situations and single or multi-processing environments with mid-range/high-end models. Entry models with max. 64 threads and 8 cores (T5120/T5220) also provide excellent multi-processing performance.
The high throughput crossbar at 737 GB/s, ensures high speed data transfer between processors, I/O and memory, delivering high performance for business applications, large scale databases and highly loaded memory or I/O access.

With the latest I/O technology in all models, SPARC Enterprise has top network and disk access performance - 5GB/s throughput per PCI Express slot and 3Gb/s throughput per SAS (Serial Attached SCSI) DISK.
