Fujitsu Quality: PRIMEQUEST

Fujitsu is a company focused on reliability, excellence and creativity, that ensures the highest quality. Behind these words our product design and development is based on long experience and the many technological strengths founded in systems development, fabrication and implementation of mission critical systems. Fujitsu Quality is therefore the embodiment of this quest for excellence.
For Fujitsu, high reliability represents the most important factor in a mission-critical server. Rather than merely achieving a certain processing speed, servers must provide the reliability needed to sustain the business while maintaining high performance. Without this reliability, our mission-critical servers would not deliver the levels of confidence our customers demand. This Fujitsu philosophy is embodied in PRIMEQUEST servers.
High performance achieved with a full duplex structure
Fujitsu has taken the concept of system duplexing, for highest hardware reliability, and reinvented it for use in open systems.
This implementation brings together new and unique technologies which create a fully redundant structure, while maintaining
high processing performance.
In PRIMEQUEST, Fujitsu has developed a high-speed synchronous transmission technology called MTL (Mori/Muta Transceiver Logic)
for the bus that connects between processors and system boards. It delivers best in industry transmission speeds and very
high and sustained performance.
Based on MTL Fujitsu has also produced an advanced duplexed synchronous architecture (Dual Sync System Architecture) that
enables the System Mirror function. Using the System Mirror function, primary hardware devices such as memory, sets of processors and the interlinking crossbars are fully duplexed, with hardware
operation on both sides of the mirror operating in complete synchronization. Hardware problems are thereby avoided, as system
outages require both sides of the mirror to fail. As a result, operational uptime is fully maximized.
In targeting both high performance and high reliability, Fujitsu products are proof of our overriding dedication to customer confidence, technology detail, and the highest standard in quality.

Compact design, lower power consumption, and maintainability
After high performance and high reliability, the key requirements of our customers are smaller footprints, lower power costs and improved maintainability.
Fujitsu introduced a central mid-plane wiring-consolidation board in PRIMEQUEST. Hardware components can now simply be plugged into interconnects at the front and back of the mid-plane. This removes the need for cables, simplifies maintenance, enables high density mounting and allows systems to expand up to 32 CPUs (64 cores) and 32 PCI cards in a basic cube needing a mere 0.8 square meters of floor space. The lack of cables also frees administrators from troublesome cable rerouting and erroneous connection problems when adjusting partition configurations. The result is greatly improved system operation, maintenance and deployment.
To remove potential heating problems from the high density mounting Fujitsu introduced a power saving design and invented a unique induction channel air-cooling technology. All areas of the equipment including high performance processors and chipsets reflect this cool power-saving approach , achieving outstanding power conservation. The PRIMEQUEST 580 for example beats Japan's energy conservation law target for fiscal year 2007 by 500%.
Fujitsu Quality is founded in close observation of day-to-day customer operations and reflects their sensitive requirements in our equipment designs and innovative approaches to system implementation.

Outstanding reliability from 14,000 automated clip test verification

Verifying the fault-tolerance of selected components and their inter-operation in a system is essential in ensuring that business operations proceed without interruption. At Fujitsu, we verify such reliability requirements by using an automatic 'clip test' process that simulates failure conditions. With PRIMEQUEST used in mission critical environments, we test at over 14,000 locations within the system. This ensures its PRIMEQUEST's effectiveness as a backbone open server system. This is, in fact, roughly twice the quality assurance previously used on mainframes of the same capacity.
All product development, manufacture, and testing of PRIMEQUEST is performed in Japan. Aware that Japanese companies have the world's highest standards for quality, Fujitsu's development, manufacturing, and testing divisions continually gather new ideas and information from other Japanese companies on a regular basis. This way our processes continue to meet the highest quality standards in the world.
150,000 internal error checkers maintain the highest reliability
Quality assurance is normally thought of as a process of the manufacturing stage. Once the product is actually running, most
manufacturers, for internal cost minimization reasons, tend to scale back on further quality checks.
PRIMEQUEST is designed with error checking mechanisms built-in. Up to 150,000 in a fully configured PRIMEQUEST 580. These
ensure at all times that all circuits within the system are performing optimally, and provide pre-emptive warnings to customer
administrators if problems are detected. PRIMEQUEST is also designed to perform self-diagnostics once it begins live operation
to avoid compromising business activity.
Manufactured and shipped based on a no compromise policy, PRIMEQUEST is fully geared to ensure outstanding reliability.
Infrastructure optimization and TCO reductions with Virtualization
PRIMEQUEST is typically introduced to consolidate and integrate systems previously operating on multiple physical servers. It provides a combination of hardware partitions for superb mutual system failure isolation and reliability, and a virtual machine (VM) function that offers a more flexible and fine-grained resource allocation approach. This Fujitsu design lets users install a broad mix of systems, with varying purposes, sizes, and reliability requirements. This total virtualization approach helps customers better achieve IT infrastructure optimization and reduced TCO.

Reliability enhancements in Linux and Microsoft operating systems
Achieving truely open mission-critical system operation and ensuring sustainable customer business processes requires a holistic approach. The system must encompass the operating system, middleware and hardware. Fujitsu actively engages in its alliances with Red Hat, Inc. and Microsoft Corporation, dispatching engineers to their central sites in the U.S. to help enhance collaborative efforts and extend product support capability. Again, Fujitsu's quality commitment to total system reliability ensures, through its global partnerships, the most comprehensive response to its customer's requests and support needs.
