Fujitsu’s New vShape Reference Architecture with ETERNUS ‘Does More with Less’
Fujitsu enables enterprises to do more with their IT infrastructures for less by introducing a new, fully virtualized vShape reference architecture that delivers greater performance and faster return on investment. Integrating the FUJITSU Storage ETERNUS DX S3 system, FUJITSU Server PRIMERGY RX300 S8 units, plus new Brocade Fibre Channel switches and Microsoft Hyper-V virtualization software as alternative to VMware software, this second-generation FUJITSU vShape reference architecture for virtualized infrastructures is now globally available.1 It supports Fujitsu’s vision of a ‘Human Centric Intelligent Society’ by helping customers to optimize their IT systems from end-to-end.
The FUJITSU vShape eco-system now prioritises higher availability, including new backup functionality based on the FUJITSU Storage ETERNUS CS800 Data Protection Appliance in combination with Symantec Backup Exec V-RAY software. Thanks to advanced deduplication technology, the ETERNUS CS800 supports very fast back up and recovery as the typical capacity requirements for disk-based backup is reduced by up to 95 percent. Simultaneously, Backup Exec V-RAY offers complete security for virtual environments with VMware or Hyper-V. In this case, the restoration process for virtual machines can be finely tuned at various levels – for individual files, Active Directory objects, Exchange emails or even SharePoint documents.
IT departments spend considerable amounts of time and money designing, purchasing, configuring, integrating and optimizing their IT infrastructures in order to deliver server or desktop virtualization. When the business grows, IT administrators must expand the infrastructure, along with constantly managing and supporting the individual components that make up the system. FUJITSU vShape improves this inefficient, time-consuming and costly approach by integrating the storage, server, network and virtualization software – and now additional software or backup solutions – into one optimized package.
FUJITSU vShape allows companies to run nearly double the number of virtual machines2 while increasing high availability by 30 percent compared to the preceding generation. The new PRIMERGY RX300 S8 rack servers provide high performance and memory. The ETERNUS DX100 S3 storage system delivers scalability and performance architectures to avoid bottlenecks, even when serving a large number of virtual machines. Enterprises benefit from reduced design costs and deployment time, freeing up resources and quickly achieving a return on their investment, so they can focus on their core business.
With so many dynamic elements in an IT infrastructure, having a reliable all-in-one solution from a single provider delivers convenience and reduces costs. In addition, for customers with specific needs, the FUJITSU vShape reference architecture is modular and flexible so packages can be adjusted as required. Companies have the flexibility to add new products and services when needed, as vShape avoids vendor lock-in.
To also support further use cases additional software validations have been conducted. For example, validation for virtual desktop infrastructures (VDIs) provides mobile users with secure access to data and applications on the company network using a variety of devices at any time, anywhere in the world. Furthermore, eCloudManager from fluid Operations is designed to simplify and automate daily IT operations and acts as a central monitoring and orchestration tool for vShape. With Jedox' web- and Excel-based business intelligence and analytics solution based on vShape technology, enterprises can benefit from a high-performance application that adapts itself to individual requirements.
Bernhard Brandwitte, Vice President, Storage Business, Global Product Business, Fujitsu
“The days of ‘DYI’ (Do-it-yourself) virtualized IT infrastructures are coming to an end. With so many facets to manage in converged infrastructures, SMEs today need a reliable all-in-one solution, from a single provider, with storage, server and network all optimized to work together seamlessly. Having quality components is only part of an effective virtualized infrastructure. The quality of service management plays an important role in increasing effectiveness for virtual machines. Fujitsu’s vShape is the solution to address this challenge.”
Marcus Jewell, Vice President of Brocade, EMEA
“Protecting vital corporate data assets and ensuring business services are secure and available at all times is of paramount importance to our customers, and FUJITSU vShape with ETERNUS gives them that confidence. Additionally, while many IT budgets remain tight, ETERNUS DX storage systems and PRIMERGY servers connected through Brocade Fiber Channel switches and vShape with Brocade’s Ethernet switches helps customers to save costs, by allowing them to purchase only what they need now, but scale as their needs evolve. In additionFujitsu supports Brocade’s Ethernet switches, simplifying maintenance when required.”
Pricing and availability
FUJITSU vShape infrastructures are now globally available via Fujitsu and its channel partners. Pricing and specifications vary according to country.
Notes to Editors
1 Customers can choose which infrastructure package suits them best
FUJITSU vShape accommodates a variety of validated designs that can be customized to specific environments and can easily be scaled as needs and demand change. vShape comes in two different solution stacks: the ETERNUS DX SAN storage version with Brocade Fibre Channel switches (known as vShape with ETERNUS, detailed in this announcement), or the NetApp FAS NAS storage version with Brocade IP switches (known as vShape with NetApp, see recent announcement). Both offer a highly-reliable solution based on industry standards and best-in-class technology.
2 Fujitsu internal tests demonstrated a performance increase by the factor of 1,9 for ETERNUS DX100 S3 compared to its predecessor the ETERNUS DX80 S2
