AI in defence: the urgent need for a ‘theory of winning’

Our world is becoming increasingly unpredictable, making relevant and timely intelligence more valuable than ever. Running parallel to this is the need to unleash the potential advantage from ever-growing oceans of data. However, success depends on our ability to analyse the data, determine its relevance to the fight today, and prepare for the fight tomorrow.

By getting it right, defence and intelligence organisations can achieve impactful and enduring intelligence advantage. This strengthens support for decision-making and highlights the possible consequences of both action and inaction, enabling personnel to make smarter choices at the speed of relevance.

In the defence sphere, the stakes are extraordinarily high, and this makes off-the-shelf solutions wholly inadequate. Fujitsu’s Intelligence Partner Ecosystem is designed to support better decision-making by unifying the power of data and intelligence. This contextualises the analysis, making it an ideal tool for supporting defence and intelligence organisations.

It’s more than technology, it’s personal

Having both served in military environments, delivering intelligence functions in places like Bosnia, Yemen, Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as working in the Home Office, Ministry of Defence (MOD) and Partners Across Government (PAG), we understand the impact that accurate, relevant and ethical intelligence has on operational success. This is why Fujitsu’s Intelligence Ecosystem is more than innovative solutions for us. It’s a mission that’s shaped by our experience of what defence and intelligence organisations need when supporting decision-making in complex, high-pressure, and constantly evolving situations.

Innovative partnerships for forward-thinking change

It’s not simply about technology, we are outcomes-focussed, and we are driving positive outcomes through our partnerships with specialised intelligence organisations and our focus on improving operational effectiveness. By collaborating closely with our ecosystem partners, we are building intellectual partnerships and breaking away from traditional vendor-supplier models. It’s keeping our Intelligence Ecosystem small-scale and hyper-collaborative, ensuring we deliver highly bespoke, highly pertinent intelligence when it matters most.

Historically, some large organisations have been guilty of treating partners poorly, and it’s been a challenge to overcome these legacy trust issues. Of course, there are logistical challenges too, like ensuring every partner can contribute while accounting for their own competitive interests. But we’ve persevered, growing a collaborative collective that unites the best capabilities and experiences from diverse partners. Our aim is to create an environment where everyone can deliver their best.

To date, Fujitsu has started several partnerships with Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) of various sizes, which include ambitious projects like the development of geospatial intelligence services. While still at an early stage, our collaborations are realising the power that partnerships based on mutual support and long-term sustainability can offer.

Additionally, it’s well documented how serious the consequences can be when using incorrect or unethical intelligence. As a result, Fujitsu is committed to championing the importance of ensuring all intelligence activities are conducted lawfully.

Fujitsu’s unique approach and roadmap

At Fujitsu, we champion trust, aspiration and empathy as defining characteristics of our partnerships. The ‘Fujitsu Way’ underpins our efforts, setting us apart from our competitors through a dedication to ethical behaviour and genuine innovation

Moving forward, our plan is to continue engaging with – and encouraging – our partners to develop the ecosystem, through both workshops and external engagements, like roadshows and informal innovation sessions. It’s been thoughtfully designed to be a personal, selective process that keeps the focus firmly on the ecosystem’s power.

Tomorrow’s advantage is intelligence

Data is the new oil, allowing freedom of manoeuvre for a greater intelligence advantage, and by extension, control. In our Intelligence Campaign Partner Ecosystem efforts, we are attempting to close the commercial-defence digital gap, which will leverage a new generation of digital talent across industry and defence.

We know the battlefield is changing, especially in geopolitical and military contexts – and the information advantage is already pivotal for operational success. Moving forward, these changes will continue to accelerate, and the next great challenge will be in the technological space.

We know the landscape is constantly evolving and often volatile, especially in geopolitical and military contexts, where the intelligence advantage is already pivotal for operational success. Technological advancements will continue to accelerate, and just like intelligence, there will never be enough available. With both current and future challenges focusing on the battle for technological supremacy, speed of analysis and dissemination will remain critical to achieving any advantage.

This is why we believe that Fujitsu’s Intelligence Campaign Partner Ecosystem will play a vital role in supporting defence and intelligence organisations to maintain an intelligence advantage over the competition long into the future.

We’re always looking to hear from you with your view on current themes, please do get in touch to discuss.
