Fujitsu Introduces Industry's First Stacked MCP with NAND Flash Memory and FCRAM
Features cost-effective, high density data storage for video, games, in new cell phones
San Jose, CA, March 7, 2001 — Fujitsu Limited and Fujitsu Microelectronics, Inc. (FMI) today introduced the industry's first stacked multi-chip packages (MCPs) that incorporate NAND Flash memory and Fast Cycle RAM (FCRAM®), developed to provide the speed and density required for data storage in the next generation of cellular telephone technology.
Fujitsu's new MB84VN23381EJ and MB84VN23391EJ multi-chip packages supply 64Mb NAND-type flash memory and 16Mb FCRAM with a static RAM (SRAM) interface, for a total of x16 configurations. The high-density 64Mb NAND flash provides a cost-efficient solution for data storage in new cellular phones, which will include video and other capabilities.
The 64 Mb NAND flash in the MCP enables page reading speeds of 200 microseconds and small block erasure speeds of just 2 milliseconds. Serial Read Access on the NAND flash is 10 milliseconds per page. The Random Read Access for the SRAM interface on the FCRAM is 90 nanoseconds per word. The new MCP accommodates large files, and can rewrite and erase the significant volumes of serial data required for the video capabilities featured in new cell phones.
The NAND-type flash memory uses a x16 configuration, twice as fast as the x8-configuration of NAND products now available for cell phone design. The MB84VN23381EJ includes a common data I/O port for flash and FCRAM, while the ports on the MB84VN23391EJ are separate.
New MCPs Meet Data Storage Needs of Mobile Video, Games Applications
"The functions and services available to users of mobile information terminals, particularly cellular phones, continue
to expand dramatically," said Fumio Baba, Vice President of System Devices Group of Fujitsu Microelectronics.
"Along with voice transmission, it is now possible to send e-mail and images, view and download home pages and, more recently, play high-quality video games on cellular phones. Value-added services are expected to multiply rapidly with the start of the IMT-2000 (International Mobile Telecommunications) next-generation mobile communication system in Japan this May." At present, MCP products for cellular phones include NOR-type flash memory, which holds programs, and other products equipped with SRAM and FCRAM for temporary storage memory. The new, increased services to be available in cell phones will further boost demand for memory products with higher density, faster speeds and lower power consumption. Fujitsu will continue to supply MCP products not only for cellular phones but also for the digital-appliance and mobile-terminals markets, both of which are expected to grow rapidly in the future, according to Baba.
Pricing, Availability and Specifications
Samples are available now from Fujitsu Microelectronics, Inc. in plastic BGA packages Measuring 11 x 12 x 1.4mm, with a
pitch of 0.8mm. Pricing for the MCP versions begins at $40 each, which is half the cost of a 64Mb NOR flash with 16 Mb SRAM.
