Dublin, August 05, 2015

Fujitsu has announced that it will supply 5,000 Fujitsu CELSIUS W530 Workstation PC’s to schools across Ireland over the next 12 months in an agreement with the Department of Education and Skills worth €6.5 million. The computers will be used to help implement the Design and Communication Graphics (DCG) curriculum.

The contract which will see schools around the country supplied with the CELSIUS W530 Workstation PC was won in partnership with Fujitsu Reseller Partner, Smart Schools and Fujitsu’s Distribution Partner Total Import Solutions.

DCG, introduced in 2007, is one of the main Leaving Certificate subjects where information technology is a central requirement in assessment methodology. Last year, over 5,400 students sat the subject for the Leaving Certificate, and it is studied in 450 schools.

The Fujitsu CELSIUS Workstations will be using the Dassault Systems Solidworks 3D software that will enable students to produce 3D CAD Designs. The contract is part of the Minister for Education’s commitment to allocate €7 Million in grants to support 450 post primary schools in the implementation of the Design and Communication Graphics programme.

Commenting on the announcement, Minister for Education and Skills Jan O’Sullivan TD stated; “My Department recognises the importance of DCG as it directly contributes to the key skills required in Ireland’s knowledge-based economy. It incorporates principles of science, materials, manufacture, design, technology and information technology. DCG is growing in schools here and the allocated funding has been increased accordingly, thus ensuring that this important subject continues to go from strength to strength.”

Commenting on the contract, Paul Frost, Channel Manager, Fujitsu Enterprise Products; “We are delighted to have the opportunity to work with the Department of Education and Skills and our reseller partners to facilitate students in the study of such an important and increasingly popular subject. The Fujitsu Celsius is the perfect solution for a broad subject that draws on several areas such as science, materials, manufacture, design and ICT, therefore requiring a technology solution that meets the needs of teachers and students alike.”

“This agreement is the largest Fujitsu workstation agreement of its kind in Europe and Fujitsu Ireland’s largest contract within the Irish education sector to date. Through its partnership with organisations in the public and private sector, Fujitsu actively participates in Ireland's knowledge based economy and this agreement sees us extend our role to the classroom.”

Paul Roche, Managing Director of SmartSchools, “We are delighted to partner with Fujitsu in supplying the DCG schools nationwide. SmartSchools deliver end to end solutions to the education sector and our team of dedicated ICT specialists will partner with the schools to deliver a modern ICT learning environment.  Smartschools in partnership with Fujitsu are committed to delivering innovative ICT technologies to improve learning outcomes.”
