Fujitsu Makes Forestry Safer and More Sustainable with 5G-enabled Remote Machinery Control

Stockholm, February 27, 2024

Fujitsu today announces it has successfully completed the first phase of a pioneering project with Skogforsk, the Forestry Research Institute of Sweden, enabling remote control of heavy forest machinery over a private 5G network. The solution facilitates the potentially dangerous and grueling work of operating forest equipment remotely without an onboard driver, dramatically enhancing worker safety while boosting productivity and sustainability.

Fujitsu handled the system integration and on-site installation, leveraging its 5G expertise and key partnerships with Ericsson and Telenor. At Skogforsk’s Troedsson Teleoperation Lab in Uppsala, Sweden, the partners enabled operators to control forest machines from a local control shed via a private 5G network. Cameras and sensors on the machines transmit data in real time to allow full teleoperation over a low latency 5G connection. Operators precisely control the machines using Oculus VR headsets or 65” desktop screens, paving the way for them to work in safe, ergonomic environments with reduced health issues. In addition, one operator can now control multiple vehicles, enabling Skogforsk to do more with less and solve recruitment problems.

Skogforsk quickly established that Wi-Fi was not a suitable technology to connect operators and machines, as connections were not stable enough. The private 5G network provides the high bandwidth, reliability and low latency required for secure remote control of heavy machinery. It also forms a foundation for Skogforsk to explore greater automation, AI, drones and IoT for more efficient and sustainable forestry operations.

With the first phase successfully demonstrating remote teleoperation, the project partners plan to expand the 5G coverage deeper into forest areas. Eliminating an onboard driver cabin also enables lighter-weight machine design, reducing energy usage and lowering environmental impact. The project shows how 5G can revolutionize inherently hazardous industries through automation and remote working models.
