Hella Reduces IT Costs and Installs SAP Capacity on Demand with FlexFrame

“The FlexFrame concept is very convincing. We were able to effectively counteract rising costs, and the concept also showed us how to handle often unpredictable IT service requirements.” - Stefan Osterhage, Chief Information Officer, Hella KG Hueck & Co.

Hella is one of the world's leading suppliers of parts and components for the automotive industry, employing 22,500 people worldwide at 58 manufacturing facilities. The company generated revenues of more than €2.9 billion in fiscal 2002. Automotive lamps, electronic components and complete modules for motor vehicles are among the products Hella delivers to all well-known automobile manufacturers. Hella also serves retail stores and repair shops through its commercial network, which is one of the oldest and largest of its kind in the world today.

For many years software solutions from SAP have been employed by Hella to control and streamline business processes within the framework of a corporate-wide IT infrastructure. The objective was to create a system landscape that would allow for quick adjustments to rapidly changing market conditions, in addition to reducing overall IT operating costs as a way to improve enterprise cost structures.

The Project

The objective at Hella is to market its products and services much faster in the future. A key prerequisite toward reaching this goal was fast and reliable user access to the corporate SAP R/3 applications. In addition, the company hoped to reduce costs by fully exploiting its enterprise applications and by avoiding overlapping IT developments. The ideal solution was FlexFrame for mySAP Business Suite, a very flexible set of hardware and software products that drastically reduces costs and effectively adjusts SAP services to various levels of demand.

Hella - a new customer of Fujitsu Siemens Computers - decided on a test installation to evaluate this new and unique solution. It soon became clear that FlexFrame for mySAP Business Suite supports easy-to-use and affordable server applications for mySAP applications. The concept is based on a rack configuration that includes standardized modules with the very latest blade and rack server technology from Fujitsu Siemens Computers, filers from Network Appliance installed as storage systems, and the Linux operating system.

The Result

Components that, together with SAP NetWeaver™, support intelligent and efficient usage of the FlexFrame infrastructure. The central element in this concept is the virtualization of the software, which is uncoupled from the physical server. This means that the entire SAP landscape is encapsulated in the control nodes, so that the system can react very flexibly to resource requirements whenever an SAP service is started.

Furthermore, existing server capacities can be used by all SAP services and activated or deactivated as needed. This is a real industry first - never before could an IT infrastructure be adjusted to meet demands in real time and during online operation. A scalability ranging from 110 to 5,500 users was achieved while testing this concept with the latest blade and rack server technology from Fujitsu Siemens Computers.

In addition to this extraordinary flexibility and high availability, the concept is convincing in terms of the drastically reduced costs of operating the IT infrastructure. Officials at Hella expect to benefit from savings of at least 30%.
