Fujitsu success story

Ability Matters : Part of Fujitsu UK's inclusive community

Location: United Kingdom

Ability Matters' purpose is to empower colleagues with disabilities, impairments, and caregiving responsibilities to reach their full potential by advocating for their needs, creating an accessible environment, and promoting a culture of empathy, aspiration and trust - embodying the values of "The Fujitsu Way".

Access Fujitsu Way

  • Why it matters

In the UK, a quarter of the population—including 23% of working-age adults-lives with disabilities, many of which are acquired later in life. These individuals often face significant barriers accessing digital and online services, being 50% more likely to struggle with accessibility.

Furthermore, 19% of those in paid employment provide unpaid care. Many caregivers, even if they don't self-identify as such, shoulder responsibilities that can profoundly impact their physical and mental well-being.

To build a more inclusive and equitable workplace, it's imperative to address the unique needs of colleagues with disabilities, impairments, and caregiving responsibilities.

  • Making a difference

Centered around the UK Inclusive Community's tagline “Be Completely You”, Ability Matters is driven by a passionate team of volunteers from across the UK business; many of whom have firsthand experience of the challenges imposed by disability, impairment, and caregiving. Ability Matters is making a tangible difference. The group fosters a supportive environment, offering support, resources, a platform for others, and a listening ear. By championing best practices, raising awareness, and organising events, Ability Matters is creating a workplace where everyone feels valued, respected, and able to reach their full potential.

The statistics available around disabilities, impairments, and caregiving in the UK are hard to ignore - there's a very clear need to create a more inclusive environment, both physically and digitally. The inclusion of others is everyone's responsibility.
