Fujitsu to Strengthen Network Business Structure

Tokyo, December 7, 2010 – Fujitsu Limited today announced that it will transfer the manufacturing and quality assurance operations for mobile systems products from its Nasu Plant to its wholly owned subsidiary, Fujitsu Telecom Networks Limited, which is responsible for developing and manufacturing photonics products for the Japanese market. As a result, the manufacturing and quality assurance functions for both mobile systems products and photonics products in Japan will be consolidated and integrated at the Oyama Plant operated by Fujitsu Telecom Networks, thereby unifying the manufacturing infrastructure for the network product lines.

Fujitsu Develops Optical Switch that Cuts Power Consumption by Half

Kawasaki, Japan, November 9, 2010 – Fujitsu Laboratories Limited today announced that it has been able to halve the power consumption of an optical waveguide switch based on silicon photonics through the world's first use of fine-patterned silicon germanium (SiGe) for this application, rather than conventional silicon (Si). This achievement will allow for high-speed optical switches capable of operating across a wide range of wavelengths, while featuring the world's lowest power requirements.In accordance with the constant rise of data volume being transmitted over networks, likewise, the power consumption of networking equipment shows a continuous growth trend, leading to concerns for a potentially serious energy problem in the future. Fujitsu's newly-developed technology will help contain power consumption while supporting large-volume network traffic, thus enabling high-end services linking multiple cloud networks and ultra-high-definition videoconferencing, among other applications.

Fujitsu Develops Gallium-Nitride HEMT Power Amplifier Featuring World's Highest Output in Millimeter-Wave W-Band

Tokyo and Kawasaki, Japan, October 4, 2010 – Fujitsu Limited and Fujitsu Laboratories Ltd. today announced the development of a power amplifier using gallium nitride (GaN) High Electron Mobility Transistors (HEMT) that has achieved the world's highest output performance of 1.3W for wireless communications in the millimeter-wave W-band, for which widespread usage is expected in the future. The new amplifier will offer transmission output equivalent to approximately 16 times that of existing amplifiers that use gallium-arsenide (GaAs), thereby enabling W-band transmission ranges to be extended by approximately six times.

Fujitsu Shrinks by 70% Distortion-Compensation Circuit for Fiber-Optic Transmissions over 100 Gbps

Tokyo and Kawasaki, Japan, and Beijing, China, September 21, 2010 – Fujitsu Limited, Fujitsu Laboratories Limited, and Fujitsu Research and Development Center Co., Ltd. of China today jointly announced that they have developed a digital signal processing algorithm that compensates for waveform distortion in signals sent over hundreds of kilometers of fiber-optic lines, as part of a long-haul transmission system, and that they have also reduced the size of the required circuitry by approximately 70%.

University of Tokyo, Fujitsu and NEC Succeed in Quantum Cryptographic Key Distribution from Single-Photon Emitter at World-Record Distance of 50 km

Tokyo and Kawasaki, September 10, 2010 – Institute for Nano Quantum Information Electronics, The University of Tokyo (Director: Yasuhiko Arakawa), Fujitsu Laboratories Limited, and NEC Corporation today announced that they have achieved quantum cryptographic key distribution at a world-record distance of 50 km using transmission from a single-photon emitter. This result was the product of the three-way collaboration between the University of Tokyo, Fujitsu, and NEC, and represents a milestone in quantum key distribution because it combines a single-photon emitter, which is ideal for optical transmission bands, with a prototype of a practical quantum cryptography system. Experimental success at a practical level with a single-photon emitter brings one step closer the practical use of quantum cryptography in the 1.5 µm band, which is most desirable for long-distance data transmissions.

Fujitsu Develops World's Highest-Performance Ultra-Low-Noise Transistor for Millimeter-Band Receivers

Tokyo and Kawasaki, Japan, June 3, 2010 – Fujitsu Limited and Fujitsu Laboratories Ltd. today announced the development of an indium phosphide-based high electron mobility transistor (InP HEMT) using their proprietary "space cavity" structure that, operating at the millimeter-band frequency level of 94 GHz, reduces the noise level generated by the transistor by approximately 30% compared to previous technologies, to 0.7 decibels, resulting in the world's lowest noise levels. The novel noise-lowering technology will enable sensitivity enhancements in millimeter-band receivers, which in turn would enable the time required for image capture by image sensors - being deployed for anti-terrorist initiatives in major airports - to be reduced by nearly half. In addition, as the new technology can enable range extension by 20% of high-capacity wireless transmission distance on par with optical transmissions, wireless networks can be used in place of trunk lines in locations where it is difficult to install fiber-optic cabling, thereby helping to close the digital divide.

Fujitsu and NSW Complete Indonesian Submarine Optic-fiber Network

Fujitsu Develops Gallium-Nitride HEMT Amplifier Featuring World's Highest Output in the C-Ku Band

Kawasaki, Japan, May 27, 2010 – Fujitsu Laboratories Ltd. today announced the development of an amplifier based on gallium-nitride (GaN) high electron mobility transistor (HEMT) technology, which features an output of 12.9W - more than twice the output of previous amplifiers and presently featuring the world's highest amplification output - when operating in the wide band range of the C-band, X-band, and Ku-band radio frequency spectrums between 6GHz-18GHz. By employing this amplifier, it will be possible to operate systems such as aviation radar - which conventionally utilize separate communications equipment for different frequency ranges - with a single amplifier, thereby enabling the development of smaller, lighter radar equipment and wireless communications systems that are capable of covering wide areas.

Fujitsu and University of Tokyo Achieve World's First 25Gbps Data Communication Using Quantum Dot Laser

Tokyo and Kawasaki, Japan, May 20, 2010 – Fujitsu Limited, Fujitsu Laboratories Ltd., and the University of Tokyo today announced the world's first quantum dot laser -based 25 Gbps high-speed data transmission. Quantum dot lasers are a type of laser being anticipated as a next-generation semiconductor laser capable of handling high-speed data transmissions while consuming minimal power. As increasing the number of quantum dots is known to improve a quantum dot laser's operation speed, layers of quantum dots with a higher density than conventionally employed were stacked, thereby doubling the laser's operation speed and enabling a significant improvement over previous technologies. This new technology is expected to be employed for optical sources for next-generation high-speed data communications that aim to achieve data transmission speeds of 100 Gbps, ten times faster than current data transmission speeds.

Fujitsu and University of Toronto Develop World's First Digitally-Processed Gigabit-Class High-Speed Transceiver Chip

Kawasaki, Japan and Toronto, Canada, February 10, 2010 – Fujitsu Laboratories Ltd. and the University of Toronto today announced their joint development of a new processing method for transceiver chips used in gigabit-class high-speed data transmission over wirelines. The new technology employs digital circuitry to replace previously-required structures that used analog circuits. While analog processing require circuits that are adapted to the specifications of a signal being transmitted, such as transmission distance and amplitude, this new digital approach can perform these optimizations automatically, so that a single circuit could be used to accommodate a wide range of various wireline communications. Compared to conventional processing methods, this new digital-processing method makes it possible to shorten development periods by approximately half. It is anticipated that this new technology in the future could be applied to a variety of wireline communication applications, including 10 Gbps high-speed Ethernet in datacenters.

Fujitsu Introduces World's Most Compact Integrated DQPSK Receiver for 40Gbps Optical Networks

Kawasaki , January 7, 2010 – Fujitsu Optical Components Limited today announced the development of the world's most compact (L:45mm x W:27mm x H:8mm) Integrated DQPSK Receiver which employs a balanced receiver and a delay line interferometer using PLC technology.
