  • Fujitsu and Sumitomo Electric Establish Joint Venture in Compound Semiconductor Devices Tokyo, Global, December 25, 2003 - Fujitsu Limited and Sumitomo Electric Industries, Ltd. today announced that they have reached a basic agreement to create a joint venture that will consolidate the operations of Fujitsu Quantum Devices Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of Fujitsu that is focused on the development, manufacture and sales of compound semiconductors, with the electronic devices business of Sumitomo Electric's compound semiconductor operations. Fujitsu and Sumitomo Electric will each have an equal equity ownership in the joint venture.

  • Fujitsu Develops World's First Touch Panel Using Conductive Polymer Film Tokyo, Global, December 22, 2003 - Fujitsu Laboratories Ltd. and Fujitsu Component Limited today announced the joint development of the world's first resistive touch panel that uses a conductive polymer film, a transparent conductive film that offers durability 10 times that of the conventional ITO film and succeeds in reducing production costs to less than half. Volume production capabilities for this breakthrough technology have been confirmed.

  • Fujitsu and Red Hat Form Joint Development Organization for Linux Tokyo, Global, December 18, 2003 - Fujitsu Limited and Red Hat today announced that, as a part of their global partnership in providing Linux-based solutions, engineers from the two companies have started to work together located on-site at a Red Hat office in Boston, Massachusetts (USA). The new organization will develop Linux features focusing on enterprise customer needs and will assert Fujitsu's support operations in Japan and worldwide as well.

  • Fujitsu Achieves Breakthrough in Ultrafine-Pitch Solder Bumping Tokyo, Global, December 15, 2003 - Fujitsu Limited today announced that it has developed new technology that enables formation of ultrafine pitch 35 micron (center-to-center distance of bumps) solder bumps, and high-precision flip-chip bonding interconnection. This breakthrough technology increases connection density by approximately 50 times compared to conventional flip chip interconnections and actualizes downsizing of LSIs and LSI packaging.

  • Fujitsu Achieves Breakthrough Output with Gallium Nitride HEMT Amplifier Kawasaki, Global, December 08, 2003 - Fujitsu Laboratories Ltd. today announced that it has developed a gallium nitride (GaN) high electron mobility transistor (HEMT) amplifier (Figure 1) which achieves the world's highest power output of 174 watts at 63 volts, while demonstrating unprecedented record drain efficiency of 40%, fulfilling W-CDMA system requirements for base stations. This breakthrough represents a significant step forward in making smaller and more energy efficient base stations for 3G mobile networks, and overcomes the technical hurdle for output needs exceeding 150 watts required for realistic application in 3G mobile systems.

  • Fujitsu's Plasma Tube Technologies Herald Advent of 100-Inch-Plus Flat-Screen Displays Kawasaki, Global, November 12, 2003 - Fujitsu Laboratories Ltd. today announced the development of a revolutionary new plasma tube technology to produce narrow glass tubes, measuring one meter in length and one-millimeter in diameter, that emit light using the same phosphor structure as in a conventional PDP (plasma display panel). In addition, the company has developed a technology that sandwiches an array of these plasma tubes between two electrode plates to make up a display panel. Fujitsu succeeded in producing a prototype panel using 128 plasma tubes (for a screen size of 128 mm x 1 m) that display moving images in color.

  • Fujitsu Develops World's Fastest Method of Quantum Chemical Calculations for Drug Discovery Tokyo, Global, November 10, 2003 - Fujitsu Limited and Tokai University's School of Medicine today announced the successful validation of the new computational method of quantum chemical calculations for drug discovery. The feasibility of the new method was validated and successfully proved by reproducing the biological activities of several AIDS drugs. These computing-based experiments can drastically reduce the number of animal experiments and other conventional techniques in favor of a new computational method - world's fastest Local Self-Consistent Field (Local SCF) method - developed by Fujitsu. This development opens new horizons for the application of quantum chemical calculations in drug discovery.

  • Fujitsu Paves the Way for Next-Generation Genomics-Based Drug Design with Bioinformatics Tokyo, Global, November 05, 2003 - Fujitsu Limited today announced that, together with Fujitsu Laboratories Ltd., it has developed a massively parallel simulation server, code-named the "BioServer," that will form the core system for Fujitsu's Genomics-based Drug Design Solutions (*1). The companies also announced that ZOEGENE Corporation (*2), their partner in the biotechnology field, has started validation tests of the BioServer. As an application server specially designed for genomics-based drug design, the BioServer represents a tremendous leap in the effectiveness of genomics-based drug design, enabling greater speed and precision to be applied to the analysis of the structures and functions of proteins, and thereby paving the way towards personalized medicine and the development of novel biopharmaceutical treatments.

  • Fujitsu Establishes New Semiconductor Subsidiary in Shanghai Tokyo, Global, October 31, 2003 - Fujitsu Limited today announced the establishment of a new subsidiary in Shanghai, Fujitsu Microelectronics (Shanghai) Co., Ltd., as part of the company's ongoing strategy to strengthen its profile in China's semiconductor market. The new subsidiary, which will serve as a center for the design, development, and sales of semiconductors in the region, began operations on October 30.

  • Fujitsu Reports FY2003 First-Half Financial Results Tokyo, Global, October 29, 2003 - Fujitsu Limited, a leader in customer-focused IT and communications solutions for the global marketplace, today reported consolidated net sales of 2,141.9 billion yen (approximately US$19.3 billion) for the first half of fiscal year 2003 (April 1 - September 30, 2003), a 0.4% decrease from the first half of fiscal 2002. Net sales in the second quarter increased 3.1%, to 1,203.1 billion yen, led by strong sales of PCs, mobile telephones, logic chips, and plasma display panels. It was the first time since the first quarter of FY2001 that Fujitsu posted year-on-year quarterly sales growth. Higher sales and lower operating expenses contributed to a rebound in second quarter operating income to 19.8 billion yen (US$179 million). For the company as a whole, however, a large operating loss in the first quarter resulted in an operating loss for the first six months of 17.9 billion yen (US$162 million), compared to an operating loss of 23.2 billion yen for the first half of FY2002.

  • Fujitsu Brings Dynamism and Power of Negotiation to the Electronic Marketplace Kawasaki, Japan / Sunnyvale, CA, USA, Global, October 06, 2003 - Fujitsu Laboratories Ltd. and Fujitsu Laboratories of America, Inc. today announced that they have developed an open protocol to bring automated negotiation to the electronic marketplace. Computers representing two sides of an e-commerce transaction can generate and exchange proposals back and forth until they find a set of terms that is optimal for both sides. Experienced negotiators know that when a negotiation is enlarged to include a richer set of business terms it becomes easier for both sides to extract value from the transaction. By using computers to automate the negotiation process, a very large number of business terms can be used. This allows both sides to extract more value from each transaction than ever before. This will make e-commerce transactions more efficient, and potentially create entirely new markets.

  • Fujitsu and Siemens Business Services Announce Partnership in IT-Services Tokyo, Japan / Munich, Germany, Global, October 06, 2003 - Fujitsu Limited and Siemens Business Services, a 100 percent subsidiary of Siemens AG, today announced an agreement that will further enhance the two companies' strong regional presence in the field of IT services. The agreement will enable Fujitsu to offer its multinational Japanese customers enhanced coverage in global services in areas of Europe and North America where it does not operate directly.   • Fujitsu and Synopsys Launch SoC Design Consulting Service Tokyo, Japan / Mountain View, CA, USA, Global, September 30, 2003 - Fujitsu Limited, Japan's largest ASIC vendor, and Synopsys, Inc. (Nasdaq: SNPS), the world leader in semiconductor design software, today announced a new design consulting service to help system-on-chip (SoC) designers improve the quality of designs, and thereby reduce design cycles. The companies' joint SoC design consulting service brings together Synopsys' consulting expertise in logic and physical synthesis with Fujitsu's expertise in leading-edge physical design technologies. This combination provides integrated support for customers' design processes, from the SoC specification through logic and physical synthesis to the physical design implementation stage. The service is currently available in Japan and will gradually be expanded to other markets throughout the world.

  • Fujitsu Develops High-Speed Multichannel Optical Switch Based on MEMS Mirrors Tokyo, Global, September 29, 2003 - Fujitsu Laboratories Ltd. and Fujitsu Limited today announced the development of an 80-channel optical communications switch that adopts MEMS (micro electro-mechanical system*1) mirrors (see figure 1). The new device achieves a switching speed of one millisecond, the fastest of any multi-channel optical switch to date. The new switch is expected to enable the development of the optical cross-connect systems essential for next-generation optical transmission networks.

  • Fujitsu Transfers Partial Stake in Leasing Affiliate to Tokyo Leasing Tokyo, Global, September 26, 2003 - Fujitsu Limited today announced that it has agreed to sell 400,000 shares (representing 20% of total outstanding shares) of the 900,000 shares it owns in its leasing affiliate, Fujitsu Leasing Co., Ltd., to Tokyo Leasing Co., Ltd., and today executed a contract to sell the shares. As a result of the sale, Fujitsu Leasing's financial results will no longer be consolidated in Fujitsu Limited's financial reports, and instead will be accounted for by the equity method for affiliate earnings.

  • Fujitsu, Hitachi, NEC and Oracle Showcase Reliable Web Services Tokyo, Global, September 05, 2003 - Fujitsu Limited, Hitachi, Ltd., NEC Corp. and Oracle Corp. today announced that they have successfully demonstrated interoperability between four independent implementations of reliable Web services based on the Web Services-Reliability (WS-Reliability) specification, which the companies jointly submitted to the Organization for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards (OASIS) in January. The WS-Reliability specification defines an open reliable messaging infrastructure that enables companies to conduct reliable business-to-business trading or collaboration using Web services. This demonstration is the first deliverable of an ongoing Proof-of-Concept (POC) activity for the Web Services-Reliability specification. The OASIS Web Services Reliable Messaging (WS-RM) Technical Committee members plan to update their implementations to accommodate the upcoming release of the next version of the specification, already under development by the committee.

  • Fujitsu to Consolidate its Japan-Based Semiconductor Assembly and Testing Operations Tokyo, Global, August 27, 2003 - Fujitsu Limited today announced that it will consolidate its four semiconductor back-end assembly and testing subsidiaries in Japan into one newly-established company with four facilities. The new company, Fujitsu Integrated Microtechnology Limited, will focus on the back-end assembly and testing of logic chips, integrating the unique product lines and technological strengths of each of the four units into one highly competitive organization with improved efficiencies.

  • Fujitsu Receives Order for World's Fastest Linux Cluster System from Japan's Institute of Physical and Chemical Research Tokyo, Global, July 31, 2003 - Fujitsu Limited today announced that the company has received an order from Japan's Institute of Physical and Chemical Research, known as Riken, for a supercomputing-grade cluster of Linux computers with a total of 2,048 CPUs capable of achieving 12.4 teraflops of computing performance. This system will be a model for the next generation of large-scale computing centers, based on Linux, grid computing, and other advanced technologies. It is scheduled to be operational by March 2004.

  • Fujitsu Reports FY2003 First Quarter Financial Results Tokyo, Global, July 29, 2003 - Fujitsu Limited, a leader in customer-focused IT and communications solutions for the global marketplace, today reported consolidated net sales of 938.7 billion yen, approximately US$7.8 billion, for the first quarter of fiscal year 2003 (April 1 - June 30, 2003), a 4.5% decrease from the first quarter of fiscal 2002. Lower sales of platforms products and other factors contributed to the overall decline in sales. While the company is reaping the benefits of lower fixed costs stemming from the restructuring initiatives implemented last year, the impact of lower sales resulted in an operating loss of 37.8 billion yen.

  • AMD AND FUJITSU LAUNCH NEW FLASH MEMORY COMPANY AND UNVEIL "SPANSION" GLOBAL PRODUCT BRAND Sunnyvale, CA, USA / Tokyo, Japan, Global,United States, July 14, 2003 - AMD (NYSE: AMD) and Fujitsu Limited (TSE: 6702, "Fujitsu") today announced the formation of a new Flash memory semiconductor joint venture that will market its solutions under the new Spansion™ global product brand name. The new company, FASL LLC, was formed by the integration of AMD's and Fujitsu's Flash memory businesses. The new joint venture is the largest Flash memory company in the world based on dedicated resources that include gross assets having a net book value of approximately US$3 billion and approximately 7,000 employees. Spansion Flash memory solutions are available worldwide from AMD and Fujitsu.

  • Fujitsu and Retek Announce Retail Solutions Sales Collaboration Tokyo, Global, July 10, 2003 - Fujitsu Limited and Retek Inc. today announced that they have agreed to collaborate in incorporating Retek's popular merchandise optimization, planning, operations and management software package, Retek10, as part of Fujitsu's suite of comprehensive solutions for major fashion retailers, electronics superstores, supermarkets and other large retailers in the Japanese market. The integrated solutions will encompass all aspects of retail operations, including management of store operations, inventory and merchandising, sales, customer information, and logistics, as well as supply chain management and product demand forecasting.   • Fujitsu Introduces New Built-In OSDC and USB Host 32-bit RISC Microcontroller Tokyo, Global, July 03, 2003 - Fujitsu Limited today announced that it has jointly developed with subsidiary Fujitsu VLSI Limited, a new 32-bit RISC microcontroller that controls character displays for television screens/monitors, including cathode ray tubes (CRTs), liquid crystal displays (LCDs), and plasma display panels (PDPs). The new MCU, the MB91F312, is embedded with both a high-resolution onscreen display controller (OSDC) and a universal serial bus (USB) host interface, enabling customers to deliver high-resolution, high-performance home theater systems.

  • Fujitsu and Nokia Collaborate to Provide Enterprise Mobility Solutions and Services Tokyo, Japan / Espoo, Finland, Global, June 30, 2003 - Fujitsu Limited and Nokia today announced that they will cooperatively develop and provide end-to-end mobile solutions and services for enterprises utilizing Nokia's range of business terminals and platforms and Fujitsu's wide range of capabilities in consulting, systems integration and managed services. The companies will provide secure, easy-to-use horizontal and customized vertical mobility solutions and services for companies that want to take advantage of mobility to increase efficiency, reduce costs and improve business processes. Initial rollouts will start immediately in the Nordic region and the UK, with expansion into selected regions of EMEA and Asia Pacific anticipated in the early part of 2004.

  • Fujitsu Releases AccelArray™ Structured ASIC Devices Tokyo, Global, June 26, 2003 - Fujitsu Limited today announced the release of the AccelArray™ structured ASIC devices that deliver faster, less costly development times through the use of standardized interconnect layers for basic system circuitry and key IP macros embedded in the base master of the architecture. AccelArray ASICs are built on Fujitsu's advanced 0.11-micron process to achieve performance on par with standard cell ASICs in 0.11-micron technology.

  • Fujitsu's High-End PRIMEPOWER Servers Break One Million Operations per Second Barrier Tokyo, Global, June 18, 2003 - Fujitsu Limited today announced record-breaking results for its PRIMEPOWER™ 2500 UNIX® system in the SPECjbb_2000 Java performance benchmark. Breaking the one million operations per second barrier for the first time, Fujitsu achieved performance of 1,420,177 operations per second with a 112-way PRIMEPOWER 2500 system using the company's 1.3GHz SPARC64® V processors, shattering records previously set by HP, Sun and IBM in the same performance tests. In the 64-way server category, as well, PRIMEPOWER 2500 outpaced the competition with performance of over 800,000 operations per second. These benchmark results were published on www.spec.org as of May 29, 2003.

There were no injuries to employees.
