Fujitsu Releases Design Support Software for Manufacturers

Brings visibility to manufacturing costs in the design phase

Fujitsu Limited

Tokyo, December 08, 2010

Fujitsu announced the launch of a design-support software package for the manufacturing sector that brings visibility to manufacturing costs during the design phase, in Japan.

PLEMIA M3/DMx consolidates the management of all information involved in manufacturing, from design data to parts manifests. Users can obtain an idea of the parts and manufacturing process that the product will use, as early as the conceptualization stage of the design phase, thus bringing visibility to manufacturing costs and enabling cost reductions. Design data that is subject to change during the development cycle can also be shared in real time among designers both within Japan and in locations outside of Japan, making it possible to design products on a timely basis that meet the needs of local markets around the world.

This software, developed by Fujitsu System Solutions Limited, will help manufacturers control their global manufacturing costs and shorten their development cycles thus enhancing their competitiveness.

Background

Until now, manufacturing costs incurred during the design phase of the manufacturing process were difficult to handle, as the CAD software used to manage design data and the parts manifests used to measure costs were handled by numerous systems. When revisions were made to product specifications, the time spent on coordinating with the purchasing department resulted in delayed action. Furthermore, due to the yen's appreciation as of late, Japanese companies have had to expand their development and manufacturing overseas, with internationally scattered design teams resorting to e-mail or physical mail to send large design files, resulting in time lags in the data-sharing process.

To solve these problems, Fujitsu is launching PLEMIA M3/DMx, which brings visibility to manufacturing costs during the design phase and allows for design data to be shared globally.

Product Features

1. Visualize manufacturing costs in the design phase

In much of the manufacturing industry, a parts manifest is created based on the parts used in the design data, from which costs are calculated. As this new package unifies the management of design data and parts manifests, manufacturing costs can be visualized during the conceptualization stage of the design phase. Users can analyze the impact that specification changes will have on costs during the design phase and calculate profits based on cost estimates. This in turn enables users to make prompt ordering decisions and control manufacturing costs.

2. Share design data globally in real time

This package smoothly integrates the management of information such as design data, parts manifests, and manufacturing processes, among globally scattered design teams, thus replacing the task of e-mailing or physically sending design files with real time sharing. This makes it possible to design products on a timely basis which meet the needs of local markets around the world.

3. Learning from past errors to speed up development cycles

On the front lines of manufacturing, development cycles are often prolonged due to situations when a product needs to be reworked in the manufacturing phase. This package is designed to allow users to access such past instances during the design phase through reviewing prototypes and assessment problems, improvement and trouble reports from the manufacturing department, and on-site claims. This helps avoid reworks in the manufacturing phase, improves design quality, and shortens the development cycle.

4. Coordinate design between mechanical, electrical, and control-software subsystems for higher quality

The conventional design process clearly establishes boundaries between the designers' area of work during the first steps of the process, with design and development proceeding independently. However, attaining the best possible product safety and quality levels requires a more comprehensive approach. This package smoothly integrates the management of mechanical, electrical, and control-software design data, delivering a coordinated design environment.
