Fujitsu Upgrades Broadcast Management System for Shizuoka Telecasting

Enabling stable 24x7 operations

Fujitsu Limited,Shizuoka Telecasting Co., Ltd.

Tokyo, November 17, 2010

Fujitsu Limited and Shizuoka Telecasting Co., Ltd. today announced that Shizuoka Telecasting has upgraded its broadcast management system, which handles all television programming and advertising content, as well as broadcast scheduling, using Fujitsu's cutting-edge platform products. The new system delivers both the high reliability and quality essential in mission-critical systems, and includes early-warning indicators for operational problems, enhancing the system's ability to offer 24x7 stability.

With infrastructure optimizations aimed to simplify future system expansions and upgrades, the new system is designed to keep ICT operational costs low. As a result, Shizuoka Telecasting's system power consumption is reduced by half, thus contributing to efforts to promote environmental sustainability.

Background

To offer new services, such as digital terrestrial broadcasting, one segment mobile broadcasting, and electronic program guides, and to prepare for the switchover to all-digital broadcasting in July 2011, there is an urgent need in Japan's TV industry for enhanced information and communications technology (ICT) platforms, more effective use of ICT, and optimized investment spending.

Shizuoka Telecasting's new broadcast management system handles all the key functions required at a TV station, ranging from creating programming schedules to managing program and advertising times, managing broadcast progress data, issuing invoices, and even creating certificates indicating that programs were broadcast normally. Through the upgrade, Shizuoka Telecasting has not only enhanced its core ICT systems for higher quality and reliability, it has also enhanced its ability to deliver operational stability 24x7 with the addition of features such as early-warning indicators to help prevent problems thus supporting business continuity.

System Details

1. Highly reliable infrastructure

Fujitsu is providing its advanced platform products, including its SPARC Enterprise Unix server, PRIMERGY PC server, and ETERNUS storage system. In addition, PRIMECLUSTER, Fujitsu's software for stable system operations, not only links the hardware together, but ensures the reliability of the overall system through redundancy of system elements, early warning of problems, detection of anomalies, and automated shutdown of anomalous segments.

Fujitsu FSAS handled infrastructure optimizations with an eye toward future expansion of the system while at the same time, mitigating the risks accompanying system upgrades, resulting in a fast, reliable system switchover that did not interrupt broadcasting.

2. Stable 24x7 operations

The use of Fujitsu's Support Desk Standard enables autonomous monitoring and recovery, as well as instant reporting and fast resolution of system errors. This enhances the system's stable 24x7 operations.

3. Reducing power consumption by half

Upgrading its platform enabled Shizuoka Telecasting to reduce its power requirements and concomitant CO2 emissions by an amount equivalent to the CO2 absorption of 950 cedar trees per year(1), thereby contributing to the company's efforts to promote environmental sustainability.

Shizuoka Telecasting looks forward to continuing to improve its ICT, to use it more effectively, and to optimize its investment spending on ICT in order to further enhance management effectiveness while helping the company to build new business models.

As a business partner to Shizuoka Telecasting, Fujitsu looks forward to continuing to offer the most advanced ICT technologies to help the company develop new business, accelerate its growth strategy, and enhance its management effectiveness.

  • [1] Equivalent to the CO2 absorption of 950 cedar trees per year

Calculated based on one 50 year-old cedar tree with a height of 20-30m, absorbing an average of approximately 14kg of CO2 emissions in one year
