The 1st International Workshop on Designing AI in support of Good Mental Health
Held at KDD 2020, the leading conference on Data Mining and AI
August 21, 2020
JapaneseFujitsu Laboratories Ltd. and Fujitsu Laboratories of America, Inc. (FLA) present the 1st International Workshop on Designing AI in support of Good Mental Health in collaboration with Stanford University and Aalto University. The workshop will be held at the 26th annual edition of the world-renowned conference in the field of data mining and AI, the ACM SIGKDD Conference on Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining (KDD2020), on August 24, 2020.
Our present coronavirus pandemic has affected the rhythms of life globally. In our evolving new normal, we are faced with new stressors in addition to the baseline pandemic threat. These stressors impact our mental health in many ways. As we look ahead at a long road to a new normalcy, the need for research and development of AI technologies that support good mental health has taken on a renewed urgency.
Solving for good mental health requires an all-inclusive approach to understanding our complex human, social, and cultural selves. Progress towards this goal necessitates working together with a variety of experts. In this international workshop, experts from industry, academia, and government will come together to explore issues and solutions that will inspire us to collectively chart the direction of future AI technologies that aid and augment good mental health at scale.
Workshop Overview
・Name: International Workshop on Designing AI in support of Good Mental Health
・Date: August 24, 2020
・Location: Online from 1-4pm Pacific Daylight Time
・Registration: Zoom webinar
・Organizers: Ajay Chander (Vice President, FLA), Martha Russell (Stanford University), Anssi Smedlund (Aalto University)
It is estimated that 1 in 4 people globally have had a diagnosed mental illness and more than 3 in 5 have experienced mental illness. These numbers are increasing. As a result, the need for mental health care is increasing significantly, and governments, healthcare institutions and technology companies globally are beginning to address this escalating problem.
There are great expectations for the research and development of AI technologies that improve our mental health. New advances are being introduced and experimented with in all aspects of fostering good mental health: awareness, assessment, mediation, and maintenance. For example, we anticipate that AIs will effectively sense psychological states from various forms of human expression – from text to voice to video. They will become sophisticated at generating useful and natural responses to both assist human caregivers and to serve as effective digital caregivers themselves.
The research and design of AI technologies for good mental health requires us to be mindful and inclusive of the diversity of experiences and contexts in which we face mental health challenges, and how we might represent that in data. The path to solving for good mental health is paved with partnerships between professionals in various care ecosystems, AI researchers, government and policy experts, individuals, and institutions. Fujitsu Laboratories, in collaboration with Stanford University and Aalto University, will host this workshop to create an inclusive conversation on the theme of Good Mental Health. The workshop will inspire bold and imaginative work by discussing issues and approaches at the intersection of mental health and future AI technologies with experts from industry, academia, and government. We invite you to participate in the conversation and in this journey towards a more prosperous future for us all.
