VP-100 Series (1982)

  • Computers
  • Supercomputers

Two models of vector computers, the VP-100 and VP-200, introduced in 1982 with a performance of 500MFLOPS at the time of their introduction (for the VP-200). Applying the experience and technical expertise gained from the FACOM230-75 APU, they were designed for high compatibility with the M series mainframe and for high ease of use. It offered auto-vectorization compilers to make programming simpler. Operation of the first VP-100 began at the Nagoya University Plasma Research Center in December 1983. In 1985, the VP-400 was added to the lineup at the high end of the series and the VP-50 at the low end. The performance of the VP-400 exceeded 1 gigaFLOPS (1.142 GFLOPS), a first in the world. The VP-50 also offered opportunities for supercomputers to be utilized in the industrial world.
