FACOM ICAD (FACOM Integrated Computer Aided Design And Manufacturing System), a design and production support system using the FACOM M series, was introduced in 1981. At the time, minicomputers were frequently used for design, but the application of general purpose computers in their place made it possible to build comprehensive systems to consistently perform operations ranging from performance design using logical simulations, to production support including drafting, NC (numerical control), tape preparation, material takeoffs, and price quotation arrangements.
