The FACOM603F was introduced in 1964 as a new type of magnetic tape unit. At the time, magnetic tape units were used as external memory units for large amounts of data and system programs, and their performance and reliability greatly influenced the value of computers. The FACOM603 series contributed greatly to the spread of computer usage, achieving high performance, high reliability, ease of maintenance, and low cost. It resolved the problems that had existed with the tape feed mechanisms of past magnetic units by employing a vacuum column cushioning mechanism and a revolutionary single capstan drive system.
