New Fujitsu CS800 RA Protects Against Ransomware Attacks

Munich, April 03, 2023

Fujitsu today launches a new reference architecture for businesses seeking reassurance against ransomware attacks. The CS800 RA (reference architecture) enhances ransomware protection and secures businesses through data replication, encryption, and secure snapshots. This is combined with powerful deduplication capabilities that reduce storage needs by up to 95%. While relevant to any organization, the cost-effective reference architecture is aimed at small- and mid-sized businesses (SMBs).

Ransomware is today one of the worst headaches facing businesses. The economic damage caused by ransomware has been multiplying from year to year. Every 11 seconds, a business enterprise falls victim to a ransomware attack. Experts estimate that by 2031, ransomware attacks will occur every two seconds, and annual damage will skyrocket from about $20 billion today to $250 billion .

The impact of a ransomware attack on business continuity and brand reputation is potentially devastating, particularly for SMBs, which tend to have less comprehensive IT organizations. Cybercriminals are now targeting even backups — the last line of defense against ransomware — to limit victims’ recovery options. If an attacker gains access to backups, there is little chance to defend against paying a ransom.

Developed based on extensive customer feedback and discussions with many partners, the Fujitsu CS800 RA reference architecture counters these threats effectively. Its multi-layered approach builds in data protection from the ground up. The reference architecture is part of Fujitsu’s comprehensive solutions for data and database backup and archive to the cloud and tape, plus disaster recovery.

Fujitsu’s approach to data protection follows the proven 3-2-1 method – the process of making three copies of data, on two different media, and keeping one copy “air-gapped”, offline and offsite. This ensures that a clean backup copy is readily available for a system to restore even if an organization is impacted by a ransomware attack and its data is lost, destroyed, or encrypted.

Should ransomware still manage to penetrate any front line of defense, the reference architecture directs data to be written to an unchangeable, non-network-accessible storage pool protected against malign encryption or deletion.
