Design and manufacture

Fujitsu carefully considers environmental impact at every stage of the product lifecycle, from design to manufacture to end-of-life recycling. The company has implemented a strict in-house Guideline called ’Environmentally conscious product design and development’ which applies to all Fujitsu product development. Fujitsu’s Environmental Guideline is aimed at reducing waste, minimizing energy consumption and eliminating hazardous substances.

Aligning with the European Union’s WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) and RoHS (Restriction of the use of certain Hazardous Substances) directives, the Environmental Guideline ensures environmental compliance from conception to the very end of a product’s life. The Guideline includes a wide range of directives, from phasing out the use of hazardous substances to ensuring that all products can be easily dismantled for recycling. The Environmental Guideline forms part of every Master Purchasing Agreement with Fujitsu’s suppliers.

Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) of ICT Products:

Climate change is one of the most important challenges of the 21st century. Greenhouse gas emissions are the main reason for the climate change and have to be reduced to minimize the risk of global warming. The rapidly developing ICT industry can help to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions by minimizing the carbon footprint of and by ICT products. The product carbon footprint is the total set of greenhouse gas emissions of a product during its life cycle. It can be measured and expressed in CO₂ equivalents. It allows analyzing and visualizing the product’s environmental impact. 

With our Product Carbon Footprint project we support the worldwide activities to identify and analyze methodologies and initiatives which might be relevant for future development

Fujitsu strives to manufacture its products in a sustainable way. For example, the company makes the most of raw materials, energy and water during production by incorporating recycling loops into the assembly lines. Also, by distilling the water used to wash soldering masks and printing screens during mainboard production, 99 percent of the water can be reused.

Chemical Use Policy

Fujitsu’s Environmental Guideline ensures that the environmental impact of any chemicals used in its products is kept to a minimum. Since 1993, the company has led the industry in the development and production of Green PCs. Green products such as FUTRO thin clients, ESPRIMO desktops and CELSIUS workstations use halogen-free flame retardant plastics and halogen-free Printed Circuit Boards for mainboards.
