Leading Sustainability Activity at Fujitsu
Fujitsu is a Socially Responsible Index Leading Company
Fujitsu is taking a lead in Green activities. This includes minimizing environmental-impact in the areas of industrial pollution and consumption of natural resources in its own businesses, and the creation of strategies and products that shrink energy use in customer datacenters and offices. Fujitsu is also committed to continual assessment of its own environmental standards and conducts corporate-wide environmental sustainability activities, including the disclosure of Sustainability Reports and Environmental Accounting Reports since 1999. Such continuous and proactive activities have led Fujitsu Ltd. to be acknowledged as a leading sustainability-driven company and ranked on the Dow Jones Sustainability Index(*) as an industry category member for 10 years in a row.
* Dow Jones Sustainability Index, launched in 1999, is a world-wide index of Socially Responsible Investment, provided by Dow Jones & Company, Inc, STOXX Limited, and SAM Group.
SPARC Enterprise is a Super Green Product
SPARC Enterprise qualifies as Fujitsu Super Green Product
Choosing low environmental-impact products means improved environmental sustainability contributions. Fujitsu has stipulated strict product standards, referred to as "Green Environmental Product Regulations", to support customers in reducing their energy use and in saving space in their datacenters. These standards allow anyone to find the right products and also the best match to their Green IT requirements. Under these strict standards Fujitsu enterprise products are manufactured for premium green performance. Fujitsu recommends SPARC Enterprise M3000 as a low environmental impact product in its Super Green Product class. As a result of its superior Green performance improvement(*), SPARC Enterprise M3000 demonstrates major improvements in environmental performance compared with previous PRIMEPOWER 450 servers in its class.

Slim down your datacenter with SPARC Enterprise
By moving your server platforms to SPARC Enterprise, you will enhance your environmental performance. Energy savings will be an immediate effect. Consolidating older servers into one new SPARC Enterprise server will allow you to further reduce power consumption and space requirements.
This is the ideal upgrade path. Upgrading to SPARC Enterprise from PRIMEPOWER or Sun Fire servers will significantly shrink power consumption while boosting performance. A transformation from one Sun Fire V890 server with 1.5GHz CPU chips to one SPARC Enterprise M4000 server with 2.4GHz CPU chips will grow performance by 49% and reduce power consumption by 34%.
What’s more, consolidating multiple servers using the built-in virtualization technology will enable SPARC Enterprise to halve your server space and power consumption requirements.
Example:

- Using Solaris Containers, three PRIMEPOWER 650 servers can be consolidated into one SPARC Enterprise M5000, shrinking server space by 60% and power consumption by 40%. Importantly such upgrades require no application recompiling or complicated server tuning.
- Absolute minimum performance overheads make your server consolidation simple. Hardware Partitioning has no performance overhead at all. Solaris Containers has a minimal performance overhead. Server virtualization functions such as Hardware Partitioning and Solaris Containers are also embedded in SPARC Enterprise Mission Critical models as standard. They can be used without making any additional purchases.
Power scheduling for optimized energy use
Power scheduling is the smartest way to further optimize server energy use. Using the simple power scheduling from the system control screen, you can reduce energy use by correctly powering down systems that are not needed. Such scheduling includes the capability to power-on storage automatically before the server is powered on, and power-off storage after the server is powered off. This automatic power scheduling is available with combinations of Fujitsu SPARC Enterprise M3000/M4000/M5000/M8000/M9000 servers and ETERNUS4000 and ETERNUS8000 storage systems.
In addition, power scheduling for all Fujitsu servers and storage models is available by connecting an Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS) and Power Distribution Unit(PDU) from American Power Conversion Corp(APC).(*)
- SPARC Enterprise all models (both Mission Critical and Throughput Computing)
- PRIMEQUEST all models
- PRIMERGY all models
- ETERNUS2000/4000/8000 all models
Based on estimations of SPARC Enterprise M3000 use, its carbon footprint can be halved.

Leading UNIX server Energy-efficiency
SPARC Enterprise provides leading energy-efficiency in the UNIX market.
Comparing with HP Integrity, with the same number of CPU chips, SPARC Enterprise delivers superior energy efficiency. SPARC Enterprise M4000 consumes around 11% less power compared with HP Integrity rx6600. Power consumption calculations used in this comparison are based on maximum configuration SPARC Enterprise and HP Integrity servers running high workloads.

- SPARC Enterprise M4000 : Relevant power consumption was 1,078 Watts(*2)
- HP Integrity rx6600 : Relevant power consumption was 1,216 Watts(*3)
*1 Configurations used for this power consumption comparison are shown below.
SPARC Enterprise M4000: 4CPU chips 64GB memory, 146GB HDDx2, 4 PCI-Express slots
HP Integrity rx6600 : 4CPU chips 64GB memory, 146GB HDDx2, 4 PCI-Express slots

Green Innovation
SPARC Enterprise is a product of Fujitsu’s Green innovation in saving energy, cooling servers and maximizing datacenter resource use efficiency. The adoption of quad core processors in mission critical UNIX servers (a first) and highly efficient power conversion minimize power consumption. Server cooling is optimized by concentrating airflow on hot spots such as CPUs and memories, and adjusting the amount of airflow according to temperature. Zero cost virtualization is also embedded as standard in these servers without performance overheads or additional license or usage costs. This allows you to further slim down your datacenter without additional investments.
Compactness helps halve power consumption
Component compactness adds to the high power efficiency inside SPARC Enterprise Mission Critical models. In particular, the SPARC Enterprise M3000 incorporates solid mission critical reliability and performance in an entry-level 2U chassis UNIX server.
- Compact 2.5 inch SAS HDD save energy and space, helping to cut power consumption in half and space use by one third compared with 3.5 inch SAS HDD.
- Throughout Fujitsu’s processor development, from single-core SPARC64 V to quad-core SPARC64 VII, processors has seen energy efficiency much improved. SPARC64 VII performance has grown 3.9 times while the power consumption requirement has only doubled.

Efficient cooling shrinks datacenter costs
The efficient cooling mechanisms of SPARC Enterprise reduce the costs of datacenter air conditioning.

- Air flow is controlled by use of cooling groups. Hot spots such as CPUs and memory units can be cooled efficiently. In SPARC Enterprise Mission Critical models, separate airflows are used cool hot areas without effect on other components.
- Fan rotation changes accurately matched to temperature changes stabilize the environment within the server chassis while lowering overall fan power consumption and noise.
- Simple to use and no cost virtualization further raises the efficiency of datacenter use and resource utilization.
A Green future
Fujitsu, through its ongoing Green innovation based research and development, is continuing to seek out new designs, new technologies and more sustainable methods of enabling business growth. Key to this mission is both environmental sustainability and cost effective IT ownership and use. This includes maximizing your investment in existing software assets as well as allowing you to create the right IT environment for your own business sustainability. Fundamental to this will be Fujitsu’s support in helping you slim down your datacenter footprint, reduce ongoing costs and maximize the use of existing resources. Our aim is to make Green IT not only the environmentally friendly way to do business but also the most cost effective and efficient way you can operate your business.
