The Best Java Performance For Server Consolidation - Unix Server SPARC Enterprise Throughput Computing Model

July 21st, 2009

Fujitsu and Sun Microsystems have announced the enhancement of SPARC Enterprise Throughput Computing Models including new 1.6GHz UltraSPARC T2/T2 Plus processors.

With the high throughput UltraSPARC T2 Plus processors SPARC Enterprise T5440 has again proven worldwide No.1 Java application performance for SPECjAppServer2004®. With new 1.6 GHz UltraSPARC T2/T2 Plus processors, SPARC Enterprise T5120/ T5220/ T5240/ T5440 have enhanced their throughput performance.

With such high performance and rich memory/disk capacity, SPARC Enterprise Throughput Computing Models can save energy and datacenter space by consolidating many servers into just one.

Outstanding Java Application Server Performance

With the new 1.6 GHz UltraSPARC T2 Plus( processors 4 CPU chips/32cores/256 threads), SPARC Enterprise T5440 recorded 7661.16 jops@standard for SPECjAppServer2004® benchmark - beating the previous Word No.1 record of T5440 using 1.4 GHz UltraSPARC T2 Plus, by around 20%.
The new world record proves SPARC Enterprise Throughput Computing Models are the right choice for Web and Java application servers with around 6 times higher performance over both IBM Power System 570 and HP Integrity rx6600.

The Right Choice for Web Consolidation and Java Application Servers

Throughput Computing Models incorporate those essential elements for maximizing the effect of consolidating servers - high performance, rich server resources, and a compact chassis.

High throughput performance

Max. 8 core and 64 thread UltraSPARC T2/T2 Plus processors drive the high throughput performance of SPARC Enterprise, as proven in the World No.1 benchmark.

Rich server resources within a compact chassis

The rich memory, disk capacity and small chassis are exceptional features.

SPARC Enterprise T5240 can incorporate more memory and disks than HP Integrity and IBM Power Systems with similar 2 CPU chip formats.

  • Compared with HP Integrity rx3600, T5240 can incorporate more memory in half the rack unit space and double the disk capacity.
  • Compared with IBM Power System 520 Express, T5240 can incorporate 4 times the memory capacity in half the rack unit space and 1.8 times the disk capacity.

Costs Savings with Server Consolidation

In combination with the excellent throughput performance and high scalability, virtualization technologies such as Solaris Containers and LDoms can substantially upgrade system resource efficiency while sustaining reliability.

Production system cost reductions using Solaris Containers

Solaris Containers can build a large number of application environments (up to 8191) in a single server. This fine grain virtualization can reduce server maintenance costs. For instance, upgrading PRIMEPOWER servers to a SPARC Enterprise T5240 can reduce server footprint to 1/8th and power consumption by around 76%. (*1)

Development system cost reductions using LDoms

When you need to reduce development costs and time, LDoms are the best choice. Customers who use SPARC Enterprise T5220 and LDoms highlight the shortening of development times compared to using separate development servers.

SPARC Enterprise Throughput Computing Models can help you to adapt your business platforms to changing business environments while lowering environment impact.

*1 At the same level of performance, eight PRIMEPOWER 250 servers compare to one SPARC Enterprise T5240.
