Highest in throughput computing performance - UNIX Server SPARC Enterprise T5440

14th Oct 2008
Fujitsu and Sun Microsystems have released the new SPARC Enterprise Model T5440 with 8 core, 64 thread UtraSPARC T2 Plus processors.
A pinnacle in throughput computing servers, SPARC Enterprise T5440 offers outstanding application and OLTP server platform performance with the best space efficiency, throughput performance and lowest power consumption in its mid-range UNIX server class. With up to 4 processor sockets, Model T5440 can provide max. 32 cores/256 threads, and 512GB memory in a very compact 4U chassis. In similar level UNIX server performance comparisons T5440 proves its superior cost efficiency with lowest power consumption and space requirements.
Further, the standard availability of innovative virtualization technologies such as Logical Domains (LDoms) and Solaris Containers, lets T5440 shrink datacenter costs and reverse the growing numbers of servers. With such virtualization functions offered as standard, T5440 delivers even more cost efficiency as part of a server consolidation strategy.
With best-in-class throughput performance, cost efficiency and lowest power consumption, T5440 is also an optimal Green IT platform.
High Scalability and Compact Chassis that's Rich in Resources
The doubling of computing resources and the quadrupling of memory capacity enabled by Model T5440 easily accommodates much larger workloads than the previous top of the range Model T5240.
| SPARC Enterprise T5440 | SPARC Enterprise T5240 | |
|---|---|---|
| Max. number of sockets | 4 | 2 |
| Max. number of cores | 32 | 16 |
| Max. number of threads | 256 | 128 |
| Max. memory capacity(GB) | 512 | 128 |
High Throughput Performance in Mid-range Class
Model T5440 has double the calculation performance (SPECint_rate2006) in comparison with T5240. With the highest performance level in a mid-range server (*1), Model T5440 also has around 1.4 times the performance of IBM Power 550 Express, and triple the performance of HP Integrity rx6600.

SPARC Enterprise is a Market-leading Green Server
Power and Space Comparisons
Comparison at same server performance levels, shows Model T5440 uses around half the power consumption and approximately one-fifth the server space when compared to HP Integrity rx6600; proving the best cost efficiency in power consumption and rack space in its class.
Max. power consumption and space at the same performance level
| SPARC Enterprise T5440 | HP Integrity rx6600 | |
|---|---|---|
| Number of servers required for same performance level (*) | 1 | 3 |
| Max. power consumption (Watts) | 2629 | 4899 (1633W x 3) |
| Rack Space (Units) | 4 | 21 (7Ux3) |
* Calculated based on SPECint_rate2006. For specific performance details, refer to (*1)
T5440 reduces running costs with power management features at both core and memory levels including reduced instruction rates, parking of idle threads and cores and by turning off clocks in cores and memories when not required.
Flexible virtualization
- a standard feature - Sever Consolidation using LDoms and Solaris Containers
SPARC Enterprise T5440 has innovative virtualization functions including LDoms and Solaris Containers as standard. This makes it a most efficient server consolidation platform.
Firmware based LDoms provide virtualization technology capable of accommodating application and OS environments without any change to application code. Due to the separate nature each OS environments, any OS or application failure in any partition never affects operations in other partitions.
Solaris Containers is partitioning technology at the OS level. It can accommodate multiple applications within the same operating system partition, allotting hardware resources such CPU and memory and I/O with fine grained flexibility.
Using these virtualization technologies, provided as standard, Model T5440 delivers an optimal server consolidation platform with outstanding cost-efficiency.
