The Best Platform for Web and Application Servers

9th April 2008
SPARC Enterprise servers provide high reliability, high performance and cost-efficiency with a wide variety of model selections. SPARC Enterprise Models T5240 and T5140, the latest additions to the SPARC Enterprise Throughput Computing server line, further enhance high throughput performance and cost-efficiency.
With T5240 and T5140 having almost double the throughput performance of T5220 and T5120, they can accommodate much larger numbers of virtual Web/Application servers. Plus, the environmental impact shrinks further due to the compact chassis (1U/2U) and high energy efficiency.
Top throughput performance and cost efficiency
In the SPECjbb2005 Java VM benchmark, SPARC Enterprise T5240 achieved around 94% higher performance than T5220. Although performance
is almost double, server space(2U) remains the same as T5220, with power consumption growth just 72%; ensuring power & space
consumption to performance levels continue to shrink.

| SPARC Enterprise T5240 | SPARC Enterprise T5220 | |
|---|---|---|
| Relative Performance | 1.94 | 1 |
| SPECjbb2005 bops | 373,405 | 192,055 |
| Relative Space | 1 | 1 |
| Space (Unit) | 2U | 2U |
| Relative Power Consumption | 1.72 | 1 |
| Power Consumption (Watts) | 1,364 | 795 |
A range of innovations ensure such high throughput performance and cost efficiency.
High Performance by Multi-processors
T5240 and T5140 incorporate UltraSPARC T2 Plus with enhanced high performance and reliability. Multi-processor architecture with double the number of threads (up to 128) greatly improves performance.
High Speed Memory Access
Memory access time has a major effect on server performance. T5240 and T5140 have around 20% higher memory throughput (up to 76 Gbps), than T5220/T5120. To handle such fast memory access in a multi-processor environment, 6 memory access control units are imbedded in every CPU chip.
High Scalability
SPARC Enterprise T5240 has double the system memory resources of T5220 with memory up to 128GB and disk capacity up to 2.3TB. This richness of resources makes T5240 the best platform for Web and application server consolidation.
Saving Space and Energy
SPARC Enterprise T5240 and T5140 save space, energy and time, due to dense UltraSPARC T2 construction which incorporates fundamental server functions.
- Memory control functions imbedded in processor, shrink memory access times
- PCI-Express control mechanisms including I/O address transformation imbedded in processor shrink I/O access times
- Major cryptographic algorithms incorporated in each core enabling swift encryption and decryption

Environmental Impact Reduction
SPARC Enterprise T5240 and T5140 are the best IT platform for reduced power consumption.
For instance, multiple UNIX servers can be consolidated into just one T5240.
- A total of 8 servers the power of PRIMEPOWER 250(2U), can be consolidated into just one SPARC Enterprise T5240(2U) server.
- Power consumption can also be shrunk by 70%

To meet its social responsibility, Fujitsu is promoting its Green Policy Innovation initiative. Fujitsu has also joined The
Green Grid as a Contributor Member. Fujitsu is also leading other Japanese companies by taking a leadership role in the global
consortium dedicated to advancing energy efficiency in data centers and business computing ecosystems. Membership will help
to promote Fujitsu's initiatives for improving the energy efficiency of its data centers, servers and storage products. It
will also support the company's overall environmental goals of preventing global warming through reductions in IT-generated
carbon dioxide emissions.
Fujitsu plans closer future coordination between its Green Policy Innovation initiatives and activities for The Green Grid.
In addition, Fujitsu will leverage its energy-efficiency know-how, methodologies, and vast technological resources, to support
the creation of new efficiency standards for the industry.

SPECjbb®2005 is a benchmark test developed by SPEC® to evaluate the performance of servers running Java-based applications. It simulates the processing of real-world business applications such as ordering, shipping, receipts, payment processing, inventory management and customer data management. Thus, the results can be used as an index of processing performance that reflects real-world business operations. For more details and results refer to
