Platform for High-performance, cost-efficiency and compactness

A New Standard in Technology for Entry Severs SPARC Enterprise T5220 and T5120

9th October 2007

SPARC Enterprise servers provide enhanced support for our customer's business by leveraging the innovative technologies of both Fujitsu and Sun.

SPARC Enterprise Models T5220 and T5120, additions to the SPARC Enterprise entry server class, are the latest implementation of this strategy and bring new levels of high-performance and cost-efficiency to the SPARC Enterprise family.

Based around UltraSPARC T2 processors and high density multi-core/multi-thread processor design, the T5220 and T5120 servers achieve twice the throughput of the existing T2000 and T1000 models. They also incorporate the latest enhanced technologies including high-speed Ethernet, cryptography and memory interfaces in a very compact chassis. The result is high throughput with outstanding cost efficiency.

UltraSPARC T2 - High Throughput Processor -

With enhanced performance from double the threads, swift in-parallel floating point and cryptographic calculations, plus direct I/O accesses on the processor chip, T5220 and T5120, using UltraSPARC T2 processors, are capable of the highest performance. They will accelerate a range of web, business applications and database processing tasks where throughput and transaction turn-around are of the highest priority, while ensuring excellent cost efficiency.

The latest 65nm semiconductor technology has enabled max. 8 cores/64 threads, I/O controllers and dedicated calculation units to be incorporated on a single chip. This means UltraSPARC T2 can handle a range of applications swiftly and efficiently. It can also accommodate specific characteristics and requirements for high network loads, frequent use of cryptographic or floating point calculations.

PCI Express and 10 Gigabit Ethernet controls, incorporated on the single chip, enable direct network accesses and improved network performance. The addition of floating point and cryptographic calculation units per core also enables swift and parallel calculation capability.

This high integration of most major functions onto a single chip has reduced the number of component parts resulting in improved hardware reliability and the smallest practical form-factor. Plus with additional data protection mechanisms, build into the chip (cache memory, registers, etc.), overall service reliability is also much improved.

The latest technology standards - FB-DIMM, PCI Express, 10Gigabit Ethernet

SPARC Enterprise T5220 and T5120 support fully buffered DIMM (FB-DIMM), PCI Express and 10 Gigabit Ethernet, to lift server application performance, as shown below.

  • For applications needing high memory access capacity: Use of FB-DIMM more than doubles memory bandwidth to 64 GB/s from 25 GB/s (compared with T2000/T1000).
  • For applications needing high I/O access capacity: Use of the PCI Express interface provides 5 times the throughout of PCI-X, and 10 times more than PCI. The 10Gigabit Ethernet incorporated on the processor chip also easily handles high-speed network infrastructure.

Manageability Improvements

Each T5220 and T5120 model comes equipped with a service processor and software as standard. Called Integrated Lights Out Manager (ILOM), this enables server monitoring and management through a simple look and feel interface. ILOM is an enhanced service processor and is the latest evolution of the previous Advanced Lights Out Manager (ALOM).

ILOM features include:

  • Swift server problem detection through regularly patrolling/display of server status. The entire server environment (CPUs, memory, disk drives, fan rotation, temperature, etc.) and server components are monitored.
  • The ability to reduce server management costs through use of intuitive web-based look and feel operation.
  • Reduced security risks through SSL and SSH

Application server performance in UNIX entry servers

In the two tier SAP Standard Sales Distribution (SD) benchmark, SPARC Enterprise T2000 achieved 1100 SAP SD benchmark users; giving it top position in the single CPU chip server class (Registered, 22nd Aug., 2007) – comparative performance with HP Integrity rx2660 and IBM p5 505Q.

Through these No.1 benchmark positions in single CPU application and Web server processing SPARC Enterprise has proven its excellence in front end server and high throughput processor technology.
