Fujitsu Social Digital Twin doubles Beryl's micromobility revenue in Norwich trial
Revolutionising micromobility: Data-driven approach to optimise micromobility hubs placement

Fujitsu today announced the preliminary results of its field trial with Beryl, enabling the micromobility company to optimise the planning and development of new sites for rental bays across Norwich, England. Through its partnership with Fujitsu and the use of Social Digital Twin (SDT) technology, Beryl is recording double the ridership and revenue at new sites — helping Norwich become a greener and more sustainable city.
Beryl runs nationwide UK bike-share schemes with a wide range of bikes, e-bikes, e-scooters and cargo bikes available. Its micromobility vehicles are used by citizens looking for greener or alternative modes of transport as they face the travel demands of their daily life. Beryl is well-established in Norwich – boasting over 175 sites in the city where users can park and hire their micromobility vehicles.
However, as the company looked to grow and expand into new areas, it needed a cutting-edge, data-driven technology solution for designing its rental bay networks – one that could maximise its ridership and revenue, de-risk its investment strategy and bring sustainable transportation options to as many people as possible.
Reflecting Beryl’s long-standing partnership with Fujitsu in the areas of research and development, the company turned to Fujitsu’s SDT technology to address this challenge. SDT uses a number of data sources to look at where people live, how they commute, and what factors they consider in making their transport decisions, creating a digital replica of people’s travel habits in the real world. Based on this information, SDT provided recommendations on the optimal locations for new sites across the city of Norwich.
During the trial period, Beryl placed six new virtual hub locations based on SDT and compared the usage of these bays to nine new bay locations placed using traditional methods. The results were indisputable: at the end of the two-month trial period, Beryl experienced more than double the ridership, therefore revenue, across sites it had used SDT for deployment, compared to the sites where it hadn’t.
