Fujitsu Announces New Mainframe Operating System for BS2000/OSD

Upgrade helps future-proof mainframe technology in the datacenter

Munich, November 04, 2011

Fujitsu today announces an extensive upgrade to its mainframe operating system BS2000/OSD. New in version 9.0 is simplified management and the introduction of largely operator-free deployment, plus expanded and enhanced features for storage and the accelerated integration of data backup, based on industry standards. As a result, mainframe users can integrate the latest innovations in open IT infrastructure technologies while also benefiting from the reliability, high performance transactions, more economic use of resources and guaranteed system compatibility of Fujitsu BS2000 mainframes.

Fujitsu will introduce the pilot phase for version BS2000/OSD-BC V9.0 in March and general availability is planned for June 2012. The new operating system supports all shared servers in the Fujitsu Business Server S and SQ series line-up. In combination with the SQ200 Business Server, live migration of BS2000 guest systems is also new. This enables non-disruptive maintenance of SQ systems and allows cost-saving adaptation of infrastructure resources by ensuring they are flexible enough to meet current needs. With version 9.0, Fujitsu’s software developers underline the long-term strategy of rigorous support for open standards, as BS2000 files can now also be saved across networks via the introduction of support for the standard NFS (Network File System) protocol.

The new network storage capability is fully compatible and opens up the possibility that files which are not performance-critical can be stored on inexpensive NAS drives, albeit at the cost of slightly lower performance. In addition, the new software allows applications to run even if they are spanned across different system platforms (for example Linux at the presentation layer and BS2000/OSD at the business logic layer). This avoids the need for maintenance of platform-specific file copies via file transfer. The new BS2000/OSD Version 9.0 also supports LTO-5 storage media and seamlessly supports LTO-5 drive encryption.

Further enhancements include the introduction of support for PAV (Parallel Access Volume) Alias-plate devices, which can also be used for paging, plus disk I/O (input and output) optimization. Now, up to 4 I/Os per device can be performed in parallel. Furthermore, the storage host component SHC-OSD also supports local and remote data mirroring plus the snapshot functionality of Fujitsu ETERNUS DX disk systems, allowing fully automatic storage management of integrated BS2000 systems.

Dr. Rolf Strotmann, Vice President Enterprise Server and Software at Technology Solutions says: "Version 9.0 of the mainframe operating system BS2000/OSD means that our customers benefit from the combination of the best technologies from a variety of IT environments. They can leverage the advantages of the open world and integrate the capabilities of modern datacenter infrastructure, while also enjoying the characteristics typical to mainframe systems such as high transaction performance, scalability, availability and reliability.”
