Fujitsu Delivers Predictive Artificial Intelligence to Support City of Montreal Smart Mobility Program

Fujitsu Americas

Montreal, Quebec, December 15, 2020 – Fujitsu Americas was selected by the City of Montreal to help evaluate and optimize services to citizens using artificial intelligence (AI). Under a master contract awarded to Fujitsu Consulting (Canada) Inc. in 2019, the first work order was recently issued to Fujitsu to develop, automate, deploy and scale a predictive AI-based solution to dynamically manage traffic lights in the context of the City’s Traffic Response Plan.

Montreal has a total of 2,500 traffic lights with multiple systems to manage these in a dynamic manner. The objective of this project is to reduce traffic jams and improve traffic flows leveraging real-time data collected from the previous 15 minutes to predict the traffic for the subsequent 15 minutes, informing decision-making and helping the City take quick and decisive action to proactively reduce traffic-related issues before they occur. Fujitsu is leveraging its AI Center of Excellence and working collaboratively with the City of Montreal, its employees and Fujitsu local resources to deliver this innovative project in an accelerated, five-month timeframe.

This project supports the City of Montreal in its quest to use data and AI to make more informed decisions while also improving the overall quality and efficiency of services it provides to citizens. With a goal to improve quality of life, urban development and privacy for its citizens, the City of Montreal also looked to Fujitsu to provide an initial assessment of the current business environment and identify opportunities for the City of Montreal to enhance its capabilities using AI. Fujitsu focused its analysis on four key areas to start:

  • CCTV and image AI analytics for optimizing processes and enhancing user experience.
  • Crowd flow for crowd detection and movement.
  • Smart mobility for traffic congestion and real-time traffic light synchronization based on traffic flow.
  • Route optimization for city services such as snowplows, garbage trucks and inspection cruises.

Public infrastructure that is efficient and runs smoothly can significantly improve the quality of life for citizens. Advanced technology such as artificial intelligence, quantum computing and data analytics can accelerate efforts to create a smarter, more efficient city, ultimately tied to the value that can be derived from data.

“The City of Montreal has access to a tremendous amount of data, all of which is critical to improving services to citizens, including mobility, urban infrastructure, public safety and experiences at key events and attractions,” said Robert Lai, Head of Public Sector, Fujitsu Consulting (Canada) Inc. “We’re looking forward to working closely with the City of Montreal to pinpoint ways to make city services smarter and more efficient for its citizens.”

Fujitsu is supporting ever-growing customer and market requirements for applications leveraging AI technology. The company established Fujitsu Intelligence Technology, based in Vancouver, in November 2018 to work alongside businesses to fast-track their innovation and time to market requirements. This global hub supports the development and go-to-market strategy of innovative AI and quantum-inspired technologies in North America, and further develops solutions from Japan and other regions of Fujitsu to offer a portfolio of global solutions and services.
