Coles Myer and Fujitsu join forces in software development alliance

Fujitsu Australia and New Zealand

Sydney, May 12, 2004

Coles Myer and Fujitsu Australia will join forces under a new joint alliance to manage, consolidate and develop the software platform which runs the point-of-sale systems across all Coles and BiLo supermarkets in Australia.

Under the alliance Fujitsu will be responsible for the maintenance of the current point-of-sale (POS) software used in Coles and BiLo stores while improving, developing and upgrading the application software to a common point-of-sale platform that has the potential to be extended into other Coles Myer formats as well as marketed by Fujitsu to retailers both in Australia and overseas.

The new software platform will bring the Coles and BiLo store systems into full alignment with Fujitsu's highly successful GlobalSTORE software architecture used by hundreds of retailers worldwide.

"This is a significant step in our strategy to achieve world's best practice," said Peter Mahler, Chief Information Officer for Coles Myer. "We want to consolidate a variety of different POS systems that we currently use into a single, functionally rich software package that has the potential to be extended from Coles and BiLo supermarkets into other Coles Myer brands over time."

"The cost benefits to Coles Myer will be enormous once we have finalised the consolidation across brands. It will also allow us to concentrate on delivering the CML transformation priorities and IT strategy," said Mahler.

As part of the alliance agreement the Coles Myer development team for supermarket point-of-sale software has transferred across to Fujitsu as permanent staff.

"Fujitsu was a natural choice for us when we looked at this direction in our store-based systems. Our current supermarkets Point-of-Sale systems are already built on a GlobalSTORE base and Fujitsu's extensive expertise, plus an excellent cultural fit with ourselves, meant that we had a high level of confidence in trusting them with this important part of our business."

Dan O'Hara, Executive General Manager, Customer Services for Fujitsu Australia, said that the alliance confirmed the successful partnership between the two organisations that has developed over many years.

"Coles Myer is one of the global leaders in retail and a significant business partner for Fujitsu. Our experience as Australia's leading retail IT provider coupled with our global retail experience puts us in the best position possible to both develop and market some of the best retail software in the world."
