Launching its new mobile solutions business group today, Fujitsu CEO Phil Kerrigan said that mobility is a major market direction that will require a new architecture to enable changing work patterns.
"The integration of corporate applications with mobile devices, the Internet and Web services will require a new service delivery architecture to deliver the tangible benefits that are anticipated, and this is where Fujitsu has a major role to play," said Kerrigan.
"Our ability to provide the architecture that ties together the various hardware and software platforms with the key elements of multi-channel delivery, authentication, identification, security, integration and content billing represents a key differentiator in this emerging market sector," he said.
Fujitsu has identified six core components needed to deliver end-to-end mobile solutions: enterprise applications, systems integration, mobile middleware, mobile applications & content, networks and end-user devices.
"Our strength comes from our ability to offer complete solutions that encompass a wide array of mobile devices, integration capabilities, carrier relationships and consulting expertise," said Kerrigan. "Fujitsu is probably the only vendor capable of delivering the full spectrum of products and services needed to enable mobile solutions, both through our own expertise and that of our close partners."
"It's not just about extending the desktop into the field, but about leveraging an increasingly diverse array of mobile devices - including notebooks, PDAs, tablet PCs, mobile phones and more - to reduce costs while delivering greater flexibility and efficiency for both blue and white collar workers."
According to Robin Simpson, Gartner Research Director, by year-end 2003, there will be more than 0.5 billion data-enabled mobile handsets in use worldwide1.
"A real-time enterprise will require mobilised employees, products, processes and infrastructure, " says Simpson1.
Fujitsu Australia has launched the new mobile solutions division in response to increased demand for solutions enabling greater employee mobility. The new group will provide a vehicle to focus the company's considerable expertise, technical capabilities and experience, enabling it to more effectively address the diverse and complex needs of customers in this arena.
"Everything we're hearing from the analysts and what we're seeing in the market confirms the view that mobility is now becoming a bigger issue for workers at all levels of the enterprise," he said.
As part of its mobile solutions initiative Fujitsu will draw on its close relationships with major carriers for the network component of the equation.
Fujitsu plans to initially target key markets such as utilities, transport, retail, manufacturing and distribution and government.
