Sydney, September 25, 2002

The Minister for Communications, Information Technology and the Arts, Senator Richard Alston, today recognised Fujitsu Australia Limited (Fujitsu) for its contribution to the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) sector through its industry development activities.

Fujitsu was awarded a Certificate of Recognition recognising the company's contribution to the sector through its research and development (R&D), and export activities.

Fujitsu has a strong commitment to local investment, with the Systems Engineering Research Centre, Internet Data Centre, Fujitsu Australia Software Technology and Fujitsu Microsoft Solution Centre examples of the organisation's investment in the Australian ICT sector.

Fujitsu's technical expertise has been represented locally through the activities of centres of R&D excellence and the company continues to design and develop products in Australia for overseas markets.

Fujitsu's local knowledge and experience is enhanced and complemented by the resources of its local affiliate companies-Fujitsu Australia Software Technology (FAST) and DMR Consulting.

Through the development of relationships with key service providers like Fujitsu, and by building on initiatives such as the ICT facilitation package for Small-to-Medium Enterprises (SMEs), the Commonwealth Government is helping to expand and develop the ICT industry in Australia.

The new ICT package reduces reporting and compliance burdens on the Government's multinational ICT suppliers while maintaining a focus on facilitating SME development and encouraging multinationals to engage with the Australian ICT sector.

The Commonwealth Government has put in place voluntary guidelines setting out the Government's expectations for strategic industry development activities from its ICT suppliers. ICT suppliers to Government are expected to actively engage in the Australian industry and, where appropriate and commercially beneficial, make use of the skills and capabilities of Australian SMEs in the research, development and delivery of ICT products and services. In addition, these companies will assist Australian ICT SMEs to access international markets through their global networks.

The Government will continue to ensure that the efforts of companies that conduct ICT industry development activities in Australia are formally recognised for the valuable role they play in the development of the sector.
