The ATLAS software, for the FACOM M series and the FACOM S-3000 series of super minicomputers, was released in 1984 as the world’s first fully-featured English/Japanese and Japanese/English automatic translation system.
As an automatic translation system for the Japanese language, whose sentence structure is fundamentally different from English, its original translation system enabled it to overcome the technical complexities in translation from Japanese to English which are immeasurably higher than translation between various Western languages, making it possible to quickly translate large volumes of scientific and technical documents. It was also equipped with translation support functions such as a translation editor and a dictionary editor, so it could be easily used even by people without specialized computer knowledge.
