For over 20 years, Self-Checkout has been one of the most prolific forms of process automation at checkout, loved by a majority of consumer for convenience and by retailers for labor savings. However, over time, fraud at Self-Checkout has become a serious issue. Ticket-switching or affixing a lower priced item bar-code over a more expensive item is a common tactic used be by fraudsters at Self-Checkout and is very hard to detect until now. If a mismatch is detected, the Self-Checkout transaction is halted and a store staff member is alerted.
For customers, the most painful part of the shopping experience is waiting in line with carts or bags of full of items to check out. Fujitsu’s RFID Portal enhances the checkout process by combining a number of technologies to eliminate the need to scan individual barcodes. Customers simply walk through the RFID Portal, which automatically scans all items and accepts payment using palm vein authentication. This ground-breaking walkthrough shopping experience redefines retail checkout by allowing customers to complete a transaction within seconds.
