Fujitsu Virtual Air Show Marks the Royal Air Force Centenary, Engages Children in Technology Education

London, July 06, 2018 – Fujitsu today launches the Fujitsu Virtual Air Show in light of the RAF 100 - a national campaign to mark the Royal Air Force (RAF)'s centenary celebrations. The virtual reality (VR) game allows young people to use STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) skills to design and plan a flight path for an aircraft, including mid-air tricks. The Fujitsu Virtual Air Show is designed to highlight the exciting possibilities of a career in STEM for young people. The game will be on display at the National Aircraft Tour and can also be played online.
Duncan Tait, Corporate Executive Officer, SEVP and Head of Americas and EMEIA at Fujitsu, said, “Technology is evolving fast, and digital skills are going to be vital to our future security. But at present there’s a long-standing misconception that careers in STEM are highly technical, or even dull, which can put off young people pursuing these subjects. We’re passionate about showing the exciting jobs that STEM can lead to, including working with the RAF. We want young people from every background to consider a career in STEM – for their own future and ours as a country – and a VR game seems like a great tool for doing just that.”
The Fujitsu Virtual Air Show enables players to first design a customised aircraft and then plan its flightpath, by choosing from a selection of tricks depending on their ability to answer STEM questions. Fujitsu will exhibit the game as part of their wider support for the RAF centenary. The game will be displayed at the National Aircraft Tour in London from July 6 – 10, then at the Royal International Air Tattoo in Fairford from July 13 – 15, the National Aircraft Tour in Birmingham from August 25 – 27, and the Battle of Britain in Duxford from September 22 – 23.
Tait continued: “The mission of the RAF 100 is to build on the success of the last century and leave a legacy for the next, and a critical part of that is creating a strong, diverse digital talent pool. That mission is also incredibly important to us at Fujitsu, as we look to develop technology to create a safer and more prosperous society. It’s vital that we invest in young talent from the very beginning of their STEM journey. So, my advice to young people is to stick with STEM subjects! There are fantastic opportunities waiting for you.”
There is a lack of awareness among young people of the opportunities that STEM careers offer, and this needs to be addressed. Fujitsu aims to help with this – showing the eye-opening potential of what studying these subjects can lead to. As the company embraces the changes that technology is bringing, Fujitsu recognises the importance of investing in talent at the very beginning of the digital journey.

Amit Chouhan, Co-Chair, UK Cultural Diversity Network at Fujitsu said, “The Cultural Diversity Network (CDN) is keen to use the RAF100 celebrations as an opportunity to encourage young people from all backgrounds, including Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic backgrounds, to pursue education, opportunities and careers in STEM. CDN wants to encourage BAME (Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic) children to pursue a STEM career path by showing pathways and possibilities which they may not have been exposed to before, and nurture talent for the future.”

The Royal Air Force launched RAF100 from April 1 2018. The centenary itself features events, activities and other initiatives running nationwide from April to the end of September 2018. The aim of RAF100 is to highlight the role of the RAF to a new generation, encouraging young people from any background to take an interest in the Service.

We want people across the UK to be inspired to find out more about why working in the RAF is so extraordinary and to realise that the world-class training and opportunities that we offer make it an outstanding place to learn, develop and progress. We want young people to be ambitious and realise their potential, so that we can continue to be a dynamic force for good across the nation and can continue to protect the nation, as we have done so successfully throughout our first one hundred years.”
