OASYS 100 (1980)

Photo of OASYS 100

The OASYS 100 was Fujitsu's first Japanese-language word processor. It used Fujitsu's unique "Thumb Shift Keyboard," a specialized keyboard that enabled a single Japanese "kana" character to be input with a single keystroke, which dramatically increased Japanese text input speed. In comparison, competitor models required 2-3 keystrokes for a single "kana" character. The 2.7 million yen price tag was about the same as for a luxury car at the time. This word processor was introduced as a Japanese electronic typewriter in May 1980. It was officially named OASYS (Office Automation System) in June, after Fujitsu solicited names from the public for a month.
