Fujitsu Adds Superior Ethernet and Storage Service Capabilities to its Popular FLASHWAVE® 4100 MSPP

Addition of RPR Technology and both SFP and CWDM Interfaces Gives Carriers More Provisioning Flexibility for Access Networks

Chicago, IL, June 6, 2005 — Fujitsu Network Communications Inc., a leading supplier of IT and wireline/wireless networking solutions, today announced a series of significant enhancements to its FLASHWAVE® 4100 Multi-Service Provisioning Platform (MSPP) that offer superior data service provisioning flexibility and allow a smooth migration of next-generation Ethernet services onto an embedded SONET access infrastructure. Now, carriers can offer traditional private line services, advanced Ethernet services that are enhanced with Resilient Packet Ring (RPR) efficiency, and storage services in a single SONET platform that can scale from OC-3 to OC-48.

With this release, SONET, RPR, Generic Framing Procedure (GFP), Virtual Concatenation (VCAT), and Link Capacity Adjustment Scheme (LCAS) capabilities have been converged on the FLASHWAVE 4100 MSPP. This powerful mix of data service delivery technology allows carriers to offer a wide variety of carrier-class 10 Mbps to Gigabit Ethernet Line (E-Line) and LAN (E-LAN) services with efficient bandwidth provisioning granularity, statistical multiplexing, class of service differentiation and transport protection switching. Storage Area Networking (SAN) services using the new Fibre Channel/FICON™ interfaces allow carriers to capitalize on the proven reliability of SONET and offer full bandwidth for disaster recovery, storage consolidation, and remote mirroring initiatives.

New OC-n line and service interfaces include support for Small Form-factor Pluggable (SFP) technology, which minimizes sparing requirements and defers capital expenses. When fiber facilities are challenged, optional Coarse Wavelength Division Multiplexing (CWDM) interfaces will now allow multiple SONET networks to share a single pair of fibers and further reduce deployment costs. Plus, a new quad-port OC-3 service unit and enhanced OC-12 line unit offer improved platform density.

“The FLASHWAVE 4100 MSPP gives carriers a field-proven optical access and transport system that features an optimal combination of price, footprint and industry-leading service provisioning capabilities,” said Bill Erickson, senior vice president of sales and marketing at Fujitsu Network Communications. “The convergence of our existing feature-rich SONET platform with new RPR and SAN enhancements will give carriers greater service provisioning flexibility. This lowers the cost of bandwidth for carrier-class Ethernet and storage services, and provides a smooth migration of services onto their embedded SONET infrastructure.”

The FLASHWAVE 4100 platform is offered in several form factors that can be customized for both smaller customer premises and high-density multiservice applications. The FLASHWAVE 4100 Large Shelf offers scalable OC-3 to OC-48 line interfaces and 12 service interface slots for deployment at a Controlled Environmental Vault (CEV), Remote Terminal (RT) or customer premises. The FLASHWAVE 4100 Small Shelf, with integrated secure enclosure and front access interface connectors, offers six service interface slots for optimized solutions in smaller spaces. Both versions share all plug-in units and SFPs to simplify sparing costs and minimize service deployment time.
