Fujitsu Introduces New H.264 Transcoder, Based on Industry-Leading Video Compression Technology
Video Compression from MPEG-2 to H.264 Extends Recording Time by a Factor of 2.5 for High-Volume Consumer Applications
Sunnyvale, CA, August 27, 2007 — Fujitsu Microelectronics America, Inc. (FMA) today extended its family of high-performance H.264-compliant ICs, announcing a new transcoder designed to compress full high definition (1920 x 1080) MPEG-2 video data to H.264 data for high-volume consumer applications.
The new Fujitsu MB86H52 can compress MPEG-2 video data to less than half its original size, enabling transmission of full HD video over narrow bandwidths while maintaining high video quality. The combination of capabilities makes the MB86H52 ideal for high-volume consumer products, including hard disk recorders (where recording time can be lengthened by more than 2.5 times), video recorders (PVRs) and set-top boxes (where the compression technologies reduce video data sizes significantly, creating longer recording times).
The transcoder operates at an internal frequency of 216MHz, and incorporates DDR2 memory, with a 324MHz interface. Power requirements are 2W, with 1.2V typical during HD transcoding.
The functionality of the new transcoder is based on video processing technology developed for the MB86H51, an H.264 CODEC introduced by Fujitsu in May 2007 (see related press release at http://www.fujitsu.com/us/news/pr/fma_20070523.html). The MB86H52 incorporates the full HD H.264 CODEC used in the MB86H51 for video encoding and decoding. As with all the members of the product family, the MB86H52 uses proprietary video compression algorithms developed by Fujitsu Laboratories to reduce the processing burden while producing superior image quality. Fujitsu’s system memory technologies enable a compact system with low power consumption.
H.264 is the most recent international standard for video compression, jointly defined by the ITU-T (International Telecommunication Union, Telecommunication Standardization Sector) and ISO/IEC (International Organization for Standardization/International Electrotechnical Commission).

Pricing and Availability
The new MB86H52 transcoder will be available in September. It is packaged in a 496-pin PBGA, and sample pricing will start at $250 each.
