Fujitsu To Implement PalmSecure™ Biometric Authentication Device At The City Of Angels Medical Center
Award-winning PalmSecure Sensor to Help Streamline Healthcare Administrative Processes and Safeguard Unauthorized Access to the Protected Health Records
Sunnyvale, CA, February 26, 2007 — Fujitsu Computer Products of America, Inc., one of the world’s leading suppliers of innovative computer products including hard disk drives, peripherals and biometric security solutions, today announced that City of Angels Medical Center has utilized the Fujitsu PalmSecure biometric authentication device in their Urgent Care department. For this groundbreaking project, the medical center will also implement Softex Incorporated’s OmniPass Client Edition security software.
City of Angels Medical Center engages in the ownership, management and operation of hospitals in the Greater Los Angeles area, and provides much-needed medical and surgical services as well as adult psychiatric services. Their primary goal in selecting the Fujitsu PalmSecure device was to establish a robust and stringent employee identification process throughout their IT system in order to ensure patient care safety, as well as to help comply with HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) requirements of security and privacy standards.
Prior to exploring the utilization of biometrics, the City of Angels used a basic password system that allowed administrators to create new patient records or access existing ones. However, as a result of the passage of stricter guidelines regarding regulatory compliance, this single modality was no longer enough to satisfy the requirements established to safeguard patient data. Another issue was that IT management found themselves challenged while providing support in the 24/7 hospital environment. In the event a password was forgotten, IT staff needed to be available to unlock the workstation and reset the password, no matter the time of day or night.
With the implementation of the PalmSecure sensor and OmniPass software into the administrative department, the problems faced by City of Angels will be resolved in an efficient manner. The joint solution offers a powerful combination of robust biometric authentication tools for login security, access management and data protection.
The Fujitsu PalmSecure device authenticates an individual based on the person’s palm vein pattern, and provides a highly reliable and accurate form of verification. Utilizing the latest in biometric security technology, the user-friendly sensor introduces a second layer of protection for medical personnel when accessing confidential patient records as well as other sensitive data. Establishing this dual authentication system will also help in complying with federally mandated regulations. Additionally, the PalmSecure sensor’s contactless interface makes it extremely hygienic and non-invasive, which will promote user acceptance among hospital staff.
The OmniPass Client Edition software can be used by administrators to securely login to patient records and other medical applications, in addition to protecting data on the systems. The Client Edition is a personal computer (PC) application, and the software has been specifically designed to reduce the cost and complexity of managing multiple passwords in a system that is both easy to use, and which will help improve user productivity.
“Fujitsu is pleased that the PalmSecure device has been selected to support City of Angels Medical Center with their goal of safeguarding confidential patient data,” said Joel Hagberg, vice president, marketing and business development, Fujitsu Computer Products of America. “The PalmSecure sensor is a highly accurate and reliable biometric authentication device, and combined with the Client Edition software, is an ideal solution for helping organizations streamline their record management programs.”
“We looked at other types of biometric authentication devices such as hand topography and fingerprint I.D. but they had unacceptable levels of failure,” said Robin Cowles, vice president of strategic planning, City of Angels Medical Center. “PalmSecure offered a reliable and accurate solution and the OmniPass software made it simple to install and easy to use, there are no passwords for the user to remember. We also liked the fact that the product has the support of a company like Fujitsu behind it.”
