Denso Group Moves to Fujitsu Private Cloud

Shift of divisional servers to new environment, creating a highly reliable and flexible ICT platform while reducing total costs

Fujitsu Limited

Tokyo, October 19, 2011

Fujitsu today announced that, in collaboration with Denso IT Solutions, Inc., it is consolidating approximately 3,000 divisional servers of 50 group companies of the Denso Group in Japan, and replacing them with what will be one of Japan's largest private cloud environments. Denso IT Solutions is currently handling data migration, and the shift to the cloud is starting to take place in stages.

By using virtualization technology, Fujitsu and Denso IT Solutions aims to consolidate approximately 3,000 divisional servers, including each division's business application servers, as well as e-mail and groupware servers. The new private cloud environment will be a highly reliable and flexible ICT platform that takes full advantage of software for private clouds that Fujitsu developed from its expertise in building large-scale clouds, including Systemwalker Service Catalog Management V14g and ServerView Resource Orchestrator.

With the new environment, Denso IT Solutions expects to optimize its overall ICT resources and reduce total costs by raising operational efficiency. Each group company in the Denso Group will be able to use a wealth of standardized ICT resources without having to own its own servers in a highly secure environment. They will be able to use these resources through a flexible fee structure. Moreover, by consolidating servers, they will free up space and conserve electricity while reducing their CO2 emissions by up to approximately 350 tons per year (equivalent to the CO2 absorption of 25,000 cedar trees, according to Fujitsu's calculations), thereby contributing to the environmental sustainability objectives that the Denso Group is promoting.

Upgrading to a Private Cloud

In recent years, the business environment in the auto industry has become increasingly challenging. Denso IT Solutions is in charge of developing, maintaining, and operating the global IT systems of 150 Denso Group companies worldwide. The company defines its corporate philosophy as "providing advanced solutions that leverage the latest information technologies to unleash the potential of people and society contributing to a better world with a vision for the future."

For the purpose of implementing an overall optimal reformation from the perspective of cost as well as the operation and management of its ICT resources, Denso IT Solutions decided to virtually integrate and consolidate approximately 3,000 business application servers, as well as e-mail and groupware servers deployed and operated by each division in each Denso Group company, and shift them to a private cloud environment.

Denso IT Solutions anticipates the following benefits from this shift.

  1. Cut cost of server upgrades by half and reduced total costs
Through virtual integration and consolidation of servers, the cost of upgrades is expected to be reduced by half. By providing a pooled resource ICT platform, total costs are expected to be reduced.
  2. Improved operational efficiency and service
Providing group companies with ICT platforms with shared resources (hardware and middleware) that are standardized at the administrative level for issues such as back-up and failure monitoring in one-third the time that was previously required, as well as delivering a flexible fee structure.
  3. Enhanced risk management
By consolidating resources at the secure datacenter of Denso IT Solutions, risk management policies for disaster preparedness and prevention of data leaks will be enhanced.

Middleware Provided by Fujitsu

The private cloud takes full advantage of software for private clouds that Fujitsu developed from its expertise in building large-scale clouds such as Systemwalker Service Catalog Management V14g and ServerView Resource Orchestrator, a middleware package for pooled resource management.

  1. Systemwalker Service Catalog Manager V14g
The provision of resources, such as the lending of a patterned virtual platform or the use of a business application, is managed as a service and is provided to users through the cloud portal. As users are selecting and using only the services they need on their own, the operational workload of the datacenter is reduced.
  2. ServerView Resource Orchestrator pooled resource management middleware
By pooling together such resources as server, storage, and networks using virtualization technology, ICT resources are utilized with greater operational efficiency. This helps to raise their effective use by dramatically minimizing the time required to build new platforms thus reducing unused resources and enabling planned deployments of additional resources as needed.

Fujitsu will also provide platform hardware, including its PRIMERGY x86 servers and ETERNUS storage systems.

As a partner to Denso IT Solutions and Denso Corporation, Fujitsu will continue to provide cloud-related and other advanced technology. In doing so, Fujitsu seeks to work together with Denso IT Solutions and Denso Corporation in supporting the creation of new businesses, accelerating their growth strategies, and contributing to their management.
