Fujitsu Builds Cloud ICT Platform for Epson's "Mail Print" Service

Global delivery of a reliable, highly-scalable private cloud environment

Fujitsu Limited

Tokyo, October 11, 2011

Fujitsu today announced that it has built an ICT platform for Seiko Epson Corporation's "Mail Print" service(1), which launched on September 15, 2011.

Mail Print delivers a broad-range printing environment that allows users to easily print photographs or documents by simply e-mailing them directly to their Epson-brand printer from a smartphone, mobile phone, or tablet device.

To implement the new service, Fujitsu constructed an ICT platform that draws on its On-Demand Hosting Service, hosted from Fujitsu's datacenters, to operate the Mail Print back-end. As a highly-reliable and scalable private cloud system, system resources on the new ICT platform can readily be adapted to meet the scale of Epson's business. Upfront costs were reduced to approximately one-third compared with previous systems. By leveraging the advantages of cloud computing, Fujitsu was able to quickly construct the platform while minimizing the design period for building and operating the platform by 30%. Going forward, the platform will play a significant role in helping to enhance Epson's mobile and cloud printing services(2).

About Epson's Mail Print Service

With the spread of smartphones and tablet PCs in recent years, there have been greater opportunities for people to check e-mail, browse web pages, and compose documents and presentations. As these devices are often used when on-the-go, rather than when at home or the office, there has been a growing need to be able to print from a variety of locations. Until now, however, there has not been an easy way to print from these kinds of mobile devices.

Epson's new service is designed to meet this need. By simply sending an e-mail to the e-mail address of an Epson-brand printer, users can print attached photographs and documents from any place where e-mail can be sent. This opens up a wide range of potential applications for both business and private use. For instance, users can quickly send snapshots to a friend's printer while on vacation, or parents can forward photos of their children to the printers of relatives living far away.

ICT platform underlying Mail Print service

System Features

To implement the Mail Print service, Fujitsu constructed a private cloud ICT platform that is highly-reliable and scalable.

1. System leverages On-Demand Hosting Service for reliability and scalability

The new private cloud ICT platform has been built using Fujitsu's IaaS-based On-Demand Hosting Service, which delivers server infrastructure located at Fujitsu's datacenters. As the On-Demand Hosting Service can be rolled out quickly and is accessible for even small-scale operations, Epson was able to limit its upfront costs to one-third of what was required for previous systems. In addition, the new platform leverages the highly-reliable operating environment (servers, storage, networking equipment, etc.) inside Fujitsu's datacenters, which capitalize on the company's outsourcing business track record. As a result, Epson is able to offer its customers a service that meets the highest standards of reliability.

2. Mail Print platform enables location-independent printing

SYNCDOT(3), a user-friendly and highly-customizable e-mail solution that features extensive security capabilities, serves as the core technology for the new IaaS-based Mail Print platform, which takes advantage of the Fujitsu Group's abundant ICT experience and know-how. As a result, users of smartphones, mobile phones, and other devices can e-mail files directly to their printers, thereby addressing the need to print from a variety of locations without having to connect to a personal computer.

3. TRIOLE standardized platform architecture speeds the creation of a high-quality ICT platform

The new platform leverages Fujitsu's TRIOLE architecture, which is based on three core technologies—virtualization, automation, and integration—and is employed to integrate and perform an across-the-board optimization of ICT infrastructure from the standpoint of servers, storage, networking, and middleware. This, in turn, enabled Fujitsu to quickly build a high-quality ICT platform while reducing the time required for design—from building servers and other platform components to operational design—by approximately 30%.

Going forward, by utilizing the new cutting-edge cloud ICT platform, Epson will continue to develop and deliver services that enrich the daily lives of its customers. At the same time, Fujitsu will provide support to Epson to further enhance the platform. Both companies look forward to expanding their collaboration in mobile and cloud printing services while exploring new applications for the technology, including new areas of business.
