Fujitsu Cloud Service Selected by Toei Transportation for New Point Rewards Service System

Fujitsu Limited,Fujitsu FIP Corporation

Tokyo, June 27, 2011

Fujitsu Limited and Fujitsu FIP Corporation today announced that they have provided a cloud-based service system to support the ToKoPo point rewards service which will be offered by the Bureau of Transportation of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government for Toei Transportation beginning August 1, 2011. ToKoPo enables passengers to earn points when they use Toei Transportation's public transportation services, with one point equaling one yen. Amounts in increments of ten points will then be credited to users' PASMO cards which are rechargeable smart cards that can be used in lieu of tickets on trains, subways, and buses, and can also be used to pay for goods in participating stores in metropolitan Tokyo and certain areas of Japan.

Fujitsu is providing infrastructure, such as servers and middleware, as well as applications for calculating points and managing member data, in the form of a cloud-based service. Moreover, to operate the member support center, which is responsible for handling member inquiries and issuing member ID cards, Toei Transportation has chosen to use Fujitsu's Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) services. Both services will be run out of Fujitsu's highly-secure datacenters.

Through this cloud-based service system, the Bureau of Transportation of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government aims to create an optimal point rewards service for the users of the Toei Transportation's public transportation services, without having to own its individual ICT infrastructure.

About ToKoPo

In 2007, Toei Transportation introduced its PASMO smart cards, which can be used in lieu of passenger tickets. To further improve passenger service, Toei Transportation will start a point rewards service for PASMO users from August 1, 2011.

With the ToKoPo service, Toei Transportation will solicit memberships. When members use their PASMO card to board the Toei Subway, Nippori-Toneri Liner, Toden Arakawa Line, and Toei Bus, they will earn points based on their transportation usage. With one point equaling one yen, amounts in increments of ten points will be credited to the user's PASMO card.

Users wishing to register as members apply over the Internet or via regular mail. Upon completion of their registration, users will be sent a member ID card by registered mail. When members use their personally registered PASMO card at point charge machines when utilizing Toei Transportation's public transportation services, a record of their usage will automatically be computed and the associated reward points will be credited to their member ID card.

System Features

In deciding to launch this point reward service, Toei Transportation did not want to burden its employees with having to operate and manage new systems. Moreover, to reduce the cost of operations, it did not want to have its own ICT infrastructure for the service. Instead, Toei Transportation wanted to use a service from an ICT vendor that would integrate the point reward system and the member support center. For that reason, Toei Transportation selected Fujitsu's cloud-based point rewards service system and BPO services.

1. Cloud-based point rewards service system

Fujitsu's system is comprised of infrastructure, such as servers and middleware, as well as applications for calculating points and managing member data, in the form of a cloud-based service.

From the data on Toei Transportation's passenger usage records, the system extracts just the data from members, calculates the points they have earned, and credits the points to each member. The use of Interstage Data Effector middleware enables the member data extraction and point calculations to be processed at ultra-high speeds. Even changes to the complex point calculations can be performed flexibly and quickly.

The SaaS platform-based ValueFront point service has functions to handle member management, the crediting of points, and the debiting of points (when members use the points to be credited to their PASMO card). It enables low-cost operations without burdening employees with new systems operations and management tasks.

As a result, without needing its own ICT infrastructure, Toei Transportation was able to offer a new point rewards service that uses the highly-secure environment of Fujitsu's datacenters to strictly manage the personal data of passengers.

2. BPO services

The member support center is responsible for handling member inquiries as well as creating and mailing member ID cards based on the membership applications it receives. As it has chosen to use Fujitsu's Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) services to handle these functions, Toei Transportation does not need to set up its own call center or hire dedicated operators to handle these responsibilities.

As a partner to Toei Transportation, Fujitsu is committed to continuing to leverage the latest information and communications technologies to contribute to improve services for residents of the Tokyo metropolitan area.
