Fujitsu Introduces docomo SMART series™ F-03C

Advanced slim waterproof mobile phone featuring exterior touchpad for access when closed

Fujitsu today announced that its new docomo SMART series F-03C mobile phone will be available in Japan from NTT DOCOMO, Inc. beginning November 27, 2010.

The F-03C is equipped with an approximately 2" large-screen color LCD and a touchpad on the exterior of the phone, enabling users to access e-mail messages, check their schedules or browse i-mode content, even when the clamshell phone is closed. The slim waterproof mobile phone's new twin style design also incorporates a one-touch open button that quickly opens the mobile phone and allows users to operate it conventionally when they need to enter text and perform other operations using the keypad. With this new design, users can operate the mobile phone when it is both closed and open.

Up until a few years ago, clamshell-style mobile phones were mainstream in Japan. Although the market has recently been enriched by a variety of mobile phone styles, many users are still accustomed to using the clamshell design, and standard clamshell mobile phones remain very popular. On the other hand, many clamshell users have commented that, after considering the hassle required to open their phones, touchscreen-style handsets are more convenient when it comes to viewing e-mail, browsing i-mode content, and checking their schedules. The F-03C is a new style of clamshell mobile phone that satisfies the needs of clamshell users by making it possible to operate the phone even when it is closed using a touchpad. To make the most of its high-performance 12.2 megapixel camera that can record full high-definition movies, the new mobile phone features a variety of photography capabilities, such as a blurred background mode for taking photographs that, like an SLR camera, increase the blurriness of the background behind a subject, enabling users to take unique photos.

In addition, the F-03C includes a new "PITTARI VOICE (Exact voice)" feature, which detects the user's movements and surrounding environment, and adjusts the mobile phone's sound quality and volume to optimal levels. It also incorporates a variety of useful business features, such as a full-featured electronic multimedia dictionary enabling access to 15 different dictionaries, as well as an AR (augmented reality)-enabled location radar that displays on-screen information about a location simply by pointing the mobile phone towards the area. The F-03C is also IPX5/IPX8 water-resistant(1) and IP5X dust-resistant(2), allowing it to be used in a wide range of scenarios. As a My Select model, each user can fully customize the F-03C to make it their own. Users can select from among 11 different styles of name or message plates to insert a word they like-such as their full name or initials- just below the phone's screen, in addition to choosing between four different premium one-touch open buttons. The F-03C is available in four colors: BROWN, BLACK, PURPLE, and WHITE.

Product Features

1. Various features available with the phone closed

Even with the F-03C closed, a variety of features are available that usually can only be launched when the mobile phone is open. In addition to checking the schedule and new e-mail messages on the sub-display just with a single touch, users can also launch the camera and one-segment TV viewer from a menu on the exterior screen. A navigation light lets users know which functions can be used with the phone closed, making it even quicker to access features via the exterior screen.

2. 12.2 megapixel high-spec camera

F-03C is equipped with the 12.2 megapixel Exmor® for mobile CMOS sensor, which creates high-definition images, and the high-resolution Milbeaut® Mobile image-processing engine that enables high-speed continuous photography. The mobile phone also carries various other camera functions such as recording beautiful Full Hi-Definition(3) video footage, setting the shot with a blurred background mode to enhance the subject of the photo, and automatically selecting the best photos with a My Collection application. With the My Selection application which manages photos and movies, users can also conduct quick searches on their saved images.

3. "Super HAKKIRI VOICE (Extra-clear voice) 3" and "PITTARI VOICE (Exact voice)" automatically make it easier to hear the other caller's voice

In addition to "Super HAKKIRI VOICE (Extra-clear voice) 3," which adjusts the volume of the other caller's voice to make it easier to hear in a crowded environment, the mobile phone also employs "PITTARI VOICE(Exact voice)" to optimize its settings for specific environments, such as inside of a train, or while walking or running.

4. Automatic mobile tracking location-based public mode support(4)

F-03C will store information on areas where public mode and automatic text replying are used. Recognizing locations in which the functions are frequently employed, the mobile phone will prompt the appropriate changes to the settings when the user approaches these areas. By changing the settings to automatic, the F-03C will automatically switch to public mode the next time the user is in the specified area.

5. Full-featured electronic multimedia dictionary(5) useful for instant searches

The phone contains 15 different dictionaries. While this practical feature can be employed in business scenarios, it is also useful for instant searches.

6. AR-enabled location radar(6)

F-03C is equipped with an AR (augmented reality)-enabled location radar. When the user simply points the mobile phone at a surrounding retail establishment, it will display information about the store in the form of various icons. Through collaboration with Tabelog®, Gourmet Navigator®, and Hot Pepper® restaurant review websites, users can search for nearby restaurants simply by keyword or rating. Even when on vacation or business trips within Japan, the radar will quickly pick up information on the most popular places in the area.

7. Business card reader enables easy mobile address book input

The built-in business card reader recognizes text information from business cards captured by the camera and automatically inputs the data into the mobile address book. By combining this function with the mobile phone's sophisticated security features, users can safely carry with them important business card information.

8. Fingerprint sensor

By registering the user's fingerprint in advance, the mobile phone identifies its owner through fingerprint authentication, in lieu of having to type in a 4-8 digit password. Useful in business situations to manage important data.

9. microSD™ password protection

A password can be configured for the phone's microSD™ card (sold separately) or microSDHC™ card (sold separately), thereby reducing the remote risk of important personal information being leaked.

10. Folder security allows specific folders to be locked

The phone's folder security feature allows users to lock a particular folder after placing business e-mail and other highly-sensitive data inside of a folder.

11. Enhanced privacy mode

Prevents third-parties from seeing the user's mobile phone screen by changing the lighting contrast.

12. Customize the My Select model(7) with premium parts

For a limited time, users can design a custom-made, personalized model using DOCOMO's online shop. Users can customize the phone to their liking with a name or message panel below the screen or a premium one-touch open button.

13. E-mail scheduling and automatic reply

The F-03C includes an e-mail scheduling feature, which automatically sends e-mails at a pre-designated date and time, as well as an automatic reply feature, which, when configured in advance, automatically replies if an incoming call or e-mail is received from a person specified in the mobile phone's e-mail settings.

14. Link with Blu-ray Disc recorder (selected models only)(8)

Television programs stored on a Blu-ray Disc recorder can be transferred to the F-03C's microSD™ memory card(9) for viewing on the mobile phone, providing users the convenience to watch shows whenever they want.

15. Tadashi Ezure's "ETGA Swing Lesson" golf-swing analyzer application

F-03C can measure the user's golf-swing movements(10). Using this data, the mobile phone provides a diagnosis of the swing and advice for improvement based on the principles developed by professional golfer, Mr. Tadashi Ezure.

    The IPX5 designation indicates that the mobile phone can normally function after being sprayed with water from a nozzle with a diameter of 6.3 mm at a rate of 12.5 liters per minute from a distance of approximately 3m for a period of at least 3 minutes. The IPX8 designation, in the case of the F-01C, indicates that the mobile phone normally functions after being immersed in room-temperature tap water to a depth of 1.5 m for 30 minutes, and that the camera can also function while being underwater for 30 minutes.

    IP5X indicates that the mobile phone can be left in an environment with dust particles with a diameter of 75 µm or less for 8 hours, and continue to function and be used safely.

  • [3] Full Hi-Definition

    A microSD™ card (sold separately) or microSDHC™ card (sold separately) with a SD Speed Class greater than Class 4 is recommended for recording video in Full HD (1,920 × 1,080). To watch the Full Hi-Definition recording using a television or other external device, the data will need to be converted by computer.

    Active only when auto GPS is used.

  • [5] Multimedia dictionary

    The multimedia dictionary data is provided in the DVD included in the mobile phone package. To access this data, the dictionary data from the DVD must be saved on a microSD™ card (sold separately) or a microSDHC™ card (sold separately) using a PC. To save the entire dictionary stored on the DVD, it is recommended that there be at least 1.5GB of free recording space on the microSD™ card or microSDHC™ card.

    To use this, packet communication fees will apply. Depending on the usage situation, these fees may be expensive. Please ensure to use packet flat-rate services such as Pake-hodai double.

    Limited to the first 10,000 handsets sold between December 2010 and April 2011 (tentative). In addition, sales are subject to termination without notice. Only existing FOMA users are eligible for purchasing a My Select model. Customers using the FOMA service under a new contract are ineligible.

    To obtain an accurate diagnosis, the F-03C must be properly placed in the correct position. The use of the F-03C carrying case (sold separately) is highly recommended.
