Fujitsu Launches Driving Support System as a Cloud Service for Trucking Industry

Combining wireless communications with SaaS solution, collects and analyzes vehicle operations data in real time

Fujitsu Limited

Tokyo, September 10, 2010

Fujitsu today announced the release of its software as a service (SaaS)-based solution for the trucking industry in Japan. The new solution uses a digital tachograph(1) with wireless communication capabilities to collect vehicle operations data in real time as well as manage and analyze data on driver operations.

The SaaS-based solution, TRIAS/TR-SaaS, combines a digital tachograph that has wireless communication capabilities with a SaaS-based driving support system that is used over the Internet. Instead of having to install their own driving support system, users can analyze driving information from a digital tachograph installed on a vehicle with just a PC and an Internet connection. Customers utilizing this solution can provide their drivers with driving instructions based on information as vehicle speed, time, and engine rotation as well as graphs of driving performance. As a result, the solution ensures customers that their drivers are driving safely while improving the efficiency of routes, contributing to the environment through better fuel efficiency, and reducing the paperwork burden on drivers by automatically generating daily trip logs.

DTS-C1, the wireless digital tachograph used in this solution, was developed by Transtron Inc., and the SaaS-based solution used to manage and analyze data was developed by Fujitsu Kyushu Systems Limited.

Background

Japan's trucking industry has made great strides in employing digital tachographs and driving support systems to reduce their costs and burden on the environment by ensuring safe and efficient vehicle operations. Analyzing the information collected by digital tachographs, however, requires ICT systems, including servers, software, and PCs, and the costs associated with system deployment as well as operations have become a pressing issue for the industry.

To address this issue, Fujitsu has combined a wireless digital tachograph with a SaaS-based driving support system to deliver TRIAS/TR-SaaS, a SaaS-enabled driving support system that can be quickly and inexpensively deployed.

Using as a foundation its track record in Japan of 160,000 deployments of digital tachographs and other on-board systems, the Fujitsu Group will begin delivering products and services geared to the trucking industry outside of Japan to expand its business.

Solution Features

1. SaaS-based delivery enables quick and inexpensive systems deployment

The system is easy to use, requiring just a PC that can connect to the Internet, without the need for the hardware required for an ICT system to analyze vehicle operations data, nor the software installations required for each office. Upfront costs are, therefore, minimized, and the system can be up and running in no time.

2. Wireless communications capabilities built into the digital tachograph raise driver efficiency and enable real-time management of fleet

Vehicle operations data as well as data on driver operations is automatically sent through digital tachographs that use wireless communications, to Fujitsu's datacenters, thereby enabling higher driver efficiency and the real-time management of fleet operations.

3. SaaS delivery from Fujitsu's highly reliable datacenters

All data, including vehicle operations data as well as data on driver operations, is managed at Fujitsu's datacenters, which are the business platforms for Fujitsu's cloud services and employ the most rigorous facilities management and security standards, enabling customer use with peace of mind.

While generally referring to an instrument that can record time and speed, in this case it specifically refers to instruments that have been certified as conforming to the standards of Japan's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism. In addition to recording speed, distance, and time, these instruments have built-in GPS receivers, enabling them to record precise location information.
