Fujitsu and Takeda Pharmaceutical Company Deploy Largest E-Notebook Laboratory System in Japan

Fujitsu Limited

Tokyo, September 01, 2010

Fujitsu today announced the joint development with Takeda Pharmaceutical Company Limited of the largest electronic notebook (e-notebook) laboratory system in Japan. The new system, which has been designed to electronically record data related to the planning and results of drug synthesis experiments into a usable shared format, will revolutionize Takeda's pharmaceutical research department by improving productivity and providing the company with more sophisticated capabilities. The electronic laboratory notebook system recently went into operation at Takeda's synthesis research division, which performs experimental compound synthesis.

Background

In order for Takeda to fully reap the benefits of deploying an e-notebook laboratory system, including increased research efficiency, improved accuracy, reduced costs, and an enhanced ability to handle patent disputes and environmental issues, the company has decided to become the first in Japan to completely digitalize the laboratory notes from its synthesis research division and discontinue using paper.

This has enabled researchers at Takeda to input data on the design and results of experiments, which had previously been recorded on paper, into the new system from their individual PCs, thereby allowing the company to compile a tremendous volume of data in a usable format. Researchers can now use structural formulas and keywords to retrieve and access related information, making it easy for them to employ detailed experimental data, including structural formulas of new drug candidate compounds, in their own research. In addition, by obtaining an early understanding of the results of similar experiments performed in the past, Takeda will be able to reduce redundant experimentation and control costs. As a result, this system is expected to enhance the overall sophistication and efficiency of pharmaceutical research performed by the synthesis research division.

The new system, based on E-Notebook Enterprise from CambridgeSoft Corporation, features additional functions developed by Fujitsu to enable it to be operated as an entirely digital system. As such, it will serve as a drug discovery research platform for Takeda.

Fujitsu has worked to provide comprehensive support throughout the design, development, and operational phases of constructing the high-quality and highly-advanced system. This includes the creation of an infrastructure platform with the availability and reliability needed to ensure smooth and uninterrupted operations 24/7.

After partnering with CambridgeSoft in 1994, Fujitsu was the first company in Japan to offer E-Notebook Enterprise. Fujitsu continues to be actively engaged in developing and supporting E-Notebook Enterprise, such as by developing new features in response to customer demands, and has the leading track record in Japan in its implementation. Fujitsu plans to continue working with CambridgeSoft to proactively pursue business related to e-notebook laboratory systems.
