Fujitsu's ICT System Supports Mail Delivery Service for Japan Post

Fujitsu today announced the development of a system supporting the new online mail service from Japan Post Service Co., Ltd. which enables letters and documents to be sent via the Internet to the post office, in the form of online letters, faxes, and express mail, and then manually delivered by the mail carrier to the recipient's postal address in Japan.

Leveraging its expertise and experience, Fujitsu developed the new system, from its design to software deployment for approximately 1,400 post offices and delivery centers in Japan, in only four months. The system provides a user-friendly screen interface, high-reliability for 24/7 operations, and enhanced security features.

Since its introduction on February 1, 2010, the new service proved popular. In the upcoming weeks, the service is expected to be used for sending a variety of messages including college acceptance notifications, as well as congratulatory notes for school graduation or admission, and job promotions or successful job offers, all of which occur during this time of year in Japan.

Under the Japan Post Group and its slogan roughly translated as "creating the new norm," Japan Post Service is creating and offering new services designed to meet customer needs while maintaining its universal mail services.

With fax services, started by the Japan Post Group in 1981, customers could bring documents to the post office service counter and fax them to a branch located near the recipient, to then be delivered. To meet the increasing variety of needs that have emerged in recent years for digital mail services, the new online mail service is designed to make sending letters and other postal matter even more convenient.

Expanding on the traditional fax service, the new service enables faxes as well as letters, documents, and other postal matter to be sent via the Internet. The services are economical, with online faxes priced starting at 500JPY per fax, a savings of 80JPY per fax when compared to the previous fax service, and online letters and documents priced starting at 95JPY per letter.

The new system was built using the following Fujitsu products: PRIMERGY PC servers, SPARC Enterprise UNIX servers, the Interstage business application platform, and Systemwalker integrated operations management software.

Overview of New Online Mail Services

1. Online Faxes
   A service that enables online transmittal of faxes which previously needed to be brought directly to post office service counters to be faxed, printed and delivered.
2. Online Express Mail
   A service in which documents, contracts, and reports that customers create using Microsoft® Word or in PDF format are transmitted online and then delivered to a physical address as express mail.
3. Online Letters
   A service in which customers first transmit a message including the recipient's name and postal address online which is then printed at the recipient's post office branch, enclosed and sealed in an envelope, and delivered to the recipient as regular mail.
